A big thank you to all our volunteers for !

We couldn’t do it with you!

This past month has been a busy time for our volunteers as our sites are really coming to life with hedgerows in full leaf, wildflowers beginning to establish across meadows and margins, and an array of birds and insects about.

Our volunteers have been carefully planning tasks to suit the needs of breeding birds, emerging wildlife, and rapidly changing vegetation to ensure we keep the right balance.
We are incredibly grateful for the time, care, and consistency you bring to every visit; you are making a real impact. Thank you for everything you do.

Here’s some photos of them in action in recent weeks. If you’d like to become a CRT volunteer, see https://www.thecrt.co.uk/volunteering

Our latest bat walk was a huge success, with participants hearing from bat expert Mariko Whyte of Dorset Wildlife Trust and using heterodyne bat detectors on a guided evening tour of Bere Marsh Farm.

Missed out? There’s still time to join our next Bats in Summer walk on 8 August, from 8.15pm to 10pm.

There are 18 bat species in the UK, and we’ve already recorded seven of them at Bere Marsh Farm. Thanks to advances in technology, it’s becoming easier than ever to learn about these fascinating and secretive creatures of the night.

During the walk, we’ll explore a range of habitats across the farm, including open fields and woodland margins. Who knows, we may even discover a bat species not previously recorded at Bere Marsh Farm!

£10 per adult | £3 per child | £5 per CRT Friend or volunteer

Great news from Pierrepont Farm in .

We’re hearing more field crickets than ever across the farm’s footpaths this year, a positive sign for one of the UK’s rarest and most threatened invertebrates.

These remarkable insects thrive in a mixture of short and long grass, and their return reflects the benefits of careful habitat management. Listen out for their distinctive chirping on warm evenings until late June.

We've been improving habitat for amphibians and reptiles at Green Farm, Surrey, by creating three new sand scrapes in partnership with the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation.

By removing the top humic layer, we've exposed the sand beneath, creating areas around 10 metres long and 1 metre wide that will benefit a wide range of wildlife.

Helena, our Head of Conservation, explains: "Previously, bare sand on the site was limited. These new scrapes will provide valuable basking habitat for reptiles, burrowing opportunities for invertebrates, such as solitary bees, and homes for a variety of insects, offering foraging opportunities for birds too.”

The work took place on the hottest May day on record, so we'll be returning soon to complete additional scrapes. In the meantime, some marker flags and canes remain in place across the heathland. Please help us by leaving them where they are so we can finish the work safely and efficiently.

Our volunteer monitor, Lynne, has been setting up dormouse footprint tunnels at Baber’s Farm in Dorset.

Lynne is kindly sharing the fortnightly surveys with Ruth, our conservation officer, between June and September. This vital monitoring work helps us better understand where dormice are present and how we can continue to improve and protect their habitats.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our Dormice Appeal last winter. Thanks to your generosity, we raised £6,000, making projects like this possible and helping us take positive action for one of the UK's most elusive mammals.

At Bere Marsh Farm in Dorset, our volunteers have been uncovering the hidden world of moths for years.

The team has recorded an increasing variety of species while contributing valuable data to national monitoring programmes.

Led by volunteer Martin alongside Bruce and Barrie, the group carefully monitors moth boxes across the farm, including battery-operated boxes funded through our 2023 Twelve Days of Christmas appeal. Free from mains power, these boxes can now be used right out in the nature reserve.

You can join Martin for a free guided walk at Bere Marsh Farm on Friday, July 3, from 2pm to 3pm, as part of our Friday farm sessions, to learn more about the moths on site.

Volunteers wanted for Barton Community Orchard at Lark Rise Farm in Cambridgeshire!

Since planting in 2019–2020, the orchard has become a valued community space thanks to the dedication of staff, volunteers, sponsors, and Bill, whose seven years of care comes to an end this August.

We are now looking to build a volunteer team to help care for the orchard, host community events, and support its future for generations to come.

A big thank you to volunteers from for a fantastic day of practical conservation work!

Three dams had plants added, including Yellow Flag iris, Bullrush (Reedmace) and Common Reed, helping to create valuable habitat for wildlife.

The team carefully transplanted suitable plants from the Bourn Brook into the mini wetlands along the ditch to help these areas thrive.

Volunteers also helped bundle and remove the final osiers from the Nan’s Meadow coppice, as well as cutting back encroaching scrub that has been spreading into the meadow. This will help ensure the meadow can be traditionally managed and cut for hay later this summer.

Thank you to everyone involved!
