Welcome to Carl and Nicole, our newest members of staff, who have already survived two training days of acronyms, three-letter-abbreviations, teacher-speak and in-jokes. You have survived your initiation! Welcome to the team!

Review of the past year: June saw us continuing with our film-making project, “Wild Balloon”, (much to the amusement of dog-walkers in Milton Country Park), which subsequently won an award for artistic vision at the Cambridge Junction’s film festival. ❤️

We celebrated Pride Month with cake (of course), had a pop-up cafe with cake (of course), and held our end-of-year prom with cake (of course). Also the scaffolders arrived and somehow smiley faces appeared on the ends of the scaffolding just next to the languages room window. No idea how. 😇 Also no idea whether the scaffolders know yet… luckily we have cake ready to placate them as needed.

Review of the past year, just in time for the start of the new one! July saw us saying farewell to our wonderful leavers, who are variously off to colleges, apprenticeships and jobs. We also said goodbye to four of our wonderful staff: Magda, Cameron, Esther and Becky. We wish you all the very best for the future, and hope you’ll keep in touch with us. Remember that Red Balloon is very much like Hotel California in that no-one ever really leaves. ###
The new term brings new students, new staff and new challenges aplenty. Bring it on! 👍👍👍

Review of the past year: David Attenborough turned 100 at the EXACT same time we were deciding on a theme for a film with the Cambridge Junction, and so a nature documentary about teens in the wild happened. It was bonkers. It was joyful. It involved terrible wigs and a pink balaclava. It won an award 👍👍👍

Review of the past year: in April there was a lot of nature, as in A Lot, and it was good. Many of our students went out and “touched grass” (a youth phrase apparently - I’m from the last century so I wouldn’t know).
Also there was a cactus thing on the whiteboard that no-one really understood but which escalated quickly and was fun.

Review of the past year: March saw us celebrating International Women’s Day, exploring the stories behind Eid, catching up with former students at the pop-up cafe, discussing the psychology of social media with Alan Jagolinzer from the Judge Business School, going to a solo art exhibition by former student Lily, and having an Easter egg hunt. Of course.

Review of the past year: February saw us celebrating the Lunar New Year of the Horse (complete with a student’s actual hair…), and planting spring-flowering bulbs in the cemetery on Friday 13th, as well as actual lessons. Lessons happen all year round but I tend to forget to mention them. Oops!

Review of the past year: January 2026 saw us celebrating the wonderful Ruth’s 90th birthday (Ruth is one of the founders of Red Balloon), learning about rail safety through VR helmets with Network Rail, taking part in the Great British Bird Watch, experiencing snow, celebrating some of our fab teachers, and hitting 1000 followers on Facebook!
