📊 New Skills Survey Report reveals the recruitment and training challenges facing employers across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough

Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority latest Skills Survey, based on responses from 341 employers across the region, highlights growing concerns around skills shortages, recruitment difficulties and workforce development.

Key findings include:
🔸52% of employers found recruitment difficult or very difficult over the past year
🔸60% reported applicants lacking the technical skills needed for roles
Demand for digital skills is set to grow significantly over the next 2–3 years
🔸46% cited that cost and staff time remain the biggest barriers to training
🔸More employers want stronger connections with education and training providers

The findings will help shape the next Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP), ensuring employer voices remain at the heart of skills development across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Charlotte Horobin, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce, said: 'This survey provides valuable, first-hand evidence from businesses across the region. It shows where recruitment pressures are most acute, where skills gaps are emerging and what practical action is needed to help employers invest in their people.'

Andrea Sanders MBE, Assistant Director for Skills and Employment at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority added: ' The findings reinforce the need to build clearer pathways into work, strengthen technical and transferable skills, and ensure training provision reflects the real needs of the local economy.'

Congratulations to Cambridge United Football Club on securing promotion to League One - a fantastic achievement for the Club, its players, staff and, of course, the loyal supporters who have backed them every step of the way.

Moments like this go far beyond sport. Success on the pitch brings real momentum to the wider local economy - increasing footfall for local businesses, boosting hospitality and tourism, and strengthening Cambridge’s profile on a national stage. Football clubs are vital economic anchors, creating jobs, supporting supply chains, and fostering partnerships across sectors.

Equally important is the role football plays within our communities. Clubs like Cambridge United are deeply embedded in local life, helping to bring people together, build civic pride, and create shared experiences that unite generations.

Through their outreach and Cambridge United Foundation work, football also contributes to skills development and education. Engagement with schools supports young people in building confidence, teamwork, and aspiration - with programmes that increasingly link sport with wider learning, including STEM and employability skills.

As a business community, we recognise and celebrate the broader impact of achievements like this. Cambridge United’s promotion is not just a sporting success - it’s a win for the whole city.

👉 Continuing the conversation around business, growth and the UK’s future, we encourage you to join us this evening at The Great Business Debate: Is the UK still a great place to do business?

Set within Ely Cathedral, this timely discussion will bring together influential voices from across industry and academia. With networking, insight, and the opportunity to have your say, it promises to be a valuable evening for anyone invested in the region’s economic future.

Future-Proofing the Thameslink Growth Corridor

Chamber Engagement Manager Connor Butler attended the Thameslink Growth Corridor roundtable at Stevenage Football Club, which brought together senior political, business and community leaders to discuss economic growth across the regions served by Thameslink (TL) and Great Northern (GN) on the East Coast Mainline (ECML).

Attendees heard from Kevin Bonavia MP, Labour MP for Stevenage, John Whitehurst, COO at GTR (Govia Thameslink Railway) and Phil Hutchinson, Head of Strategic Planning at GTR about surfacing opportunities, challenges and critical dependencies that will shape growth along the region served by TL and GN services on the ECML (London St Pancras/Kings Cross to Peterborough/Cambridge).

During the discussion, Connor also raised and lobbied the MP on the importance of the Ely Area Capacity Enhancement (EACE) / Ely Junction improvements, highlighting its role as a key constraint on freight and passenger capacity across the wider network.

The big takeaway? Rail capacity and infrastructure investment are fundamental enablers of regional growth. If we are serious about unlocking housing, jobs and inward investment across the East Coast Main Line, we need to ensure the infrastructure is keeping pace with demand.

3 things to think about today:
🔸Reliability: How much would a more frequent, high-capacity service change your 5-year business plan?
🔸Infrastructure Gap: We’re seeing massive growth across the region - is the rail network keeping pace?
🔸Unified Voice: When business and rail leaders collaborate, we win more investment for our region.

👇 Head to the comments to see how you can get involved in this discussion.

Right now, many firms are feeling the strain:
• 62% of businesses are operating below capacity
• Utility price pressures have surged - from 48% (Q4 2025) to 62% (Q1 2026)
• Fuel cost pressures are rising too - from 23% to 32% over the same period

Against this backdrop, we’re bringing together influential voices from business in the region for a timely and important debate.

Set within an historic venue, this event will challenge perspectives, spark discussion, and give you the chance to hear directly from leaders shaping the future of UK business - including keynote speaker Shevaun Haviland, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce.

This event is particularly special as Shevaun marks her 5th anniversary in the role, and has chosen to celebrate it here in our region. Shevaun isn’t in the area often, so this is a rare chance to engage with someone who has real influence at the highest levels of government and national media.

If you’re a looking to stay informed, be heard, and connect with others navigating the same challenges - this event will be genuinely valuable.

Join us for an evening of insight, debate, and meaningful conversation.
