Cambridge Development Initiative

Cambridge Development Initiative CDI is changing the way student volunteering is done. At the end of the university year, CDI runs a 2-month programme in Tanzania.

CDI's four projects in Dar es salaam operate all year round, through our partnership with Kite Dar es Salaam, and other key local organisations. Each year, approximately 30 volunteers from the University of Cambridge, and 30 volunteers from Dar es Salaam's universities, are recruited to work full time on our four projects. They undergo a comprehensive training programme and meet weekly to plan col

laboratively for the summer implementation. During this period, our UK-Tanzanian project teams carry out an immersive mixture of project implementation, key partner meetings, government engagement and impact evaluation. We also run a short annual trip in December for the CDI UK Executive Committee to visit Dar es salaam. Over a period of two weeks CDI and Kite Dar es Salaam work together to meet our key partners, check the progress of our projects, and plan for the future.
