Cambridge SU BME Campaign

Cambridge SU BME Campaign This includes campaigning for the cultural and religious needs of the range of BME Students communities.

The Cambridge University Students' Union BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) Campaign is an autonomous platform that exists to voice the concerns of Ethnic Minority students, both graduate and undergraduate, at the University of Cambridge. We are here to represent minority students and to empower them to be proud of their background, enabling them to overcome adversity and any apprehension they may ho

ld so that that they make their views heard. We seek to ensure racial equality for all students in the University, encourage BME students to fully engage with the community as a whole and to educate and inform the general population about the diversity of BME students at Cambridge. For those of us whom have been lucky enough not to have experienced racism or other unfair disadvantages as a result of our ethnic origin, the reasons for the existence of the Campaign might not be transparent. Unfortunately, more often than not, issues such as institutional racism and student alienation go unnoticed. It is therefore the duty of the Campaign to discover the reality and inform the community.

📢 UPDATE: Defending the Right to Protest ✊🏽

Yesterday, we delivered an open letter to the Vice Chancellor on behalf of over 1,000 students and staff, urging the University to drop its injunction bid against student protests.

The right to protest is fundamental, and we will not allow it to be undermined.

As BME Officer at Cambridge SU, I stand in solidarity with students and staff who refuse to be silenced. Alongside UCU and our wider community, we will continue to push back against authoritarian measures and fight for student voices to be heard.

We stand together.

📢 The Right to Protest is Not a Privilege – It’s a Fundamental Right! ✊🏽📢

Cambridge SU strongly opposes the University’s attempt to secure an injunction that would severely limit students’ rights to protest, express dissent, and hold institutions accountable.

This sweeping injunction—set to last until 2030—would criminalise peaceful demonstrations not just on University property, but even in surrounding public spaces. The restrictions on assembly, protest, and even handing in petitions set a dangerous precedent for suppressing student activism and silencing voices on critical issues.

🚨 What does this mean?

❌ Standing outside Senate House with a sign could be deemed unlawful
❌ A student holding up a placard at graduation could face legal action
❌ Peaceful demonstrations could result in imprisonment or financial penalties

This is an attack on our fundamental rights. Universities should foster debate, not suppress it through repressive measures.

We demand that the University withdraw this injunction and commit to protecting the rights of students and staff.

🗓 Date: Friday, 29th November
🕓 Time: 4-6 PM
📍 Location: CRASSH, Cambridge

Join us for an evening of ideas, connection, and community building! We’ll kick off with a short presentation from the lab’s co-directors (4:15-4:45 PM), followed by time to network and socialize over drinks and nibbles. 🥂🍴

📢 Event Announcement! Join Us on 16th November! 📢

We’re proud to team up with the UN Millennium Fellowship and the Cambridge Black Medics Society for an essential event on health equity: “Bridging the Gap: Fighting Health Inequalities with Anthony Nolan” 🌍💉

🗓 Date: 16th November
🕒 Time: 1-3 PM
📍 Location: Clare College, Cambridge

In the UK, minority ethnic patients face a significantly lower chance of receiving life-saving stem cell transplants for diseases like leukaemia, mainly due to underrepresentation in the UK’s stem cell register. At this event, the Anthony Nolan charity will shed light on these health disparities and offer insights into how we can make a difference.

🎙 What to Expect:

A talk from experts at Anthony Nolan on the impact of these inequalities
An optional chance to sign up for the stem cell register (not required but highly encouraged!)
This event is crucial for everyone, especially minority ethnic communities impacted by these disparities. Please register on Eventbrite to help us manage numbers and ensure a great event! 👇
