More than 500 members of College visited the alpacas in the Fellows’ Garden last week!

Organiser Sophie Rayner Student Experience Officer said evidence suggested these sociable animals could help with relaxation.

‘Events like these are an important part of a programme of welfare events during the busy Easter Term. They’re fun ways to break up the long days of studying for exams and deadlines!’

On Saturday evening members of the College community gathered to celebrate the illumination of the Wren Library to mark the start of LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

Trinity Fellow for LGBTQ+ Professor Michael Squire said: ‘This celebratory College event is intended to showcase how Trinity continues to stand by its principles of inclusion and diversity.’

Organised in collaboration with TCSU and BA Society, the event was originally devised in 2024 by Law student Jaysol Doy with former LGBT liaison fellow Dr Anna Maria Hartmann and former Senior Tutor Prof Catherine Barnard.

Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈

Did you know that Trinity College, Cambridge's Great Court is the largest enclosed court in Cambridge? 🏰

Completed in the early 17th century, it remains one of Cambridge's iconic spaces.

If you look closely at the Great Gate, you’ll spot a statue of King Henry VIII holding a chair leg instead of a sceptre – the result of a famous student prank still visible today!

Congratulations to Trinity Fellow Professor Sir Shankar Balasubramanian who shares the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research with Christ's College, Cambridge Fellow Professor Sir David Klenerman and French biophysicist Professor Pascal Mayer. 👏

The trio received the award for next-generation DNA sequencing – which has transformed a slow and expensive process into a fast and widely accessible technology, now central to modern medicine.

The Fundación Princesa de Asturias will formally present this year’s awards at a ceremony attended by members of the Spanish royal family in Oviedo in October.

In 1726, a young woman from Surrey called Mary Toft becomes an overnight celebrity – the rumour is that she has given birth to rabbits. 🐇

This true story (minus the rabbits) is the subject of a bold play premiering at Cambridge’s ADC Theatre this week, 20-23 May.

Like Rabbits is written by Shaffer Playwright-in-Residence Imogen Usherwood and features many Trinity students in the cast and directing team.

Trinity College has submitted its £3bn plans to expand Cambridge Science Park for planning consent, outlining a once-in-a-generation opportunity for economic growth in the region and beyond.

The Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer has backed the College’s plans which will triple the capacity for science and tech companies and create more than 20,000 highly skilled jobs over the next 30 years.

On the centenary of his birth, Trinity members gathered in the Wren Library to hear about Sir Peter Shaffer's legacy, the dramatist's archive in the Wren Library, and the Shaffer Playwright-in-Residence scheme.

The panel included those involved in the acquisition and organisation of the archive and the beneficiaries of Sir Peter's bequest: Prof. Adrian Poole (Fellow in English), Dr Nicolas Bell (Librarian), Diana Smith (Assistant Archivist), Imogen Usherwood-Bliss (Sir Peter Shaffer Playwright-in-Residence) and James Critchley (PhD student at Trinity).

Today marks the centenary of the birth of Peter and Anthony Shaffer, twin brothers who both studied at Trinity and became award-winning writers for stage and screen.

Acclaimed for Equus and Amadeus, Sir Peter Shaffer bequeathed his personal archive to the College along with his wish to establish a Playwright-in-Residence.

The substantial archive features playscripts, correspondence and photographs.

Trinity PhD student James Critchley came across the unstaged play Our Lady of the Volcano while working on Shaffer’s first play, Five Finger Exercise.

James said: ‘It’s been really exciting to look back through the numerous letters, photographs and playscripts – unstaged or well-known - which all have the thrilling imprints of a writer whose legacy continues to flourish today.’

Trinity established with funding from the Sir Peter Shaffer Charitable Foundation the Shaffer Playwright-in-Residence scheme for early-career playwrights in 2022.

Now in its fourth year, the studentship enables an aspiring playwright to craft and stage a new play via a 12-month playwright-in-residence award, which provides a maintenance grant, research allowance and College accommodation.

Like Rabbits, a new play by Imogen Usherwood, the current Peter Shaffer Playwright-in-Residence, will be staged at the ADC Theatre 20-23 May.

This evening to mark the centenary of his birth, Trinity members are welcome to join a panel discussion in the Wren Library at 5:30pm to hear about Sir Peter Shaffer’s legacy.
