An ‘achey, lonely feeling in the chest’ a sentiment shared online. Loneliness doesn’t discriminate, but recognising its prevalence is the first step toward breaking the stigma that surrounds it.

At , we fight to bring comfort, agency, and a sense of belonging to those who feel lonely and isolated.

1️⃣ Normalise the Conversation - Stop treating loneliness like a taboo subject. The next time someone asks, “How are you?”, give yourself permission to be honest if you’re feeling isolated. By opening up, you give the person asking permission to do the same.

2️⃣ Change the Language - We need to separate loneliness from worth. Loneliness doesn’t mean you are at fault or that you’ve done something wrong, it just means your current needs aren’t being met. It does not have to be a permanent identity.

3️⃣ Check In - Check in on your friends, neighbours, and colleagues. A simple text like, “Hey, how have you actually been lately?” can bridge a massive gap.

4️⃣ Support - Meaningful support looks different for everyone. It might be a casual chat over coffee, breaking the silence of an empty room, or finding a hobby that you enjoy. Backing the charities and initiatives that provide this support helps build a world where no one feels left behind.

Loneliness doesn’t discriminate. 💚

That…

1) Making friends can be difficult

2) Socialising can feel overwhelming

3) Connecting with others can be challenging

4) Making the time to meet new people can be hard

5) Social situations can be scary

Lots of negative words! These all can be true although it doesn’t mean we need to give up on fighting loneliness, or socialising altogether. There are other ways to feel connected with others and the world around us without creating anxiety.

At WaveLength we want to find solutions to loneliness that feel manageable and are effective.

We recognise that socialising is important, but when that comes with stress and anxiety it can hinder the process.

We also want those who experience these feelings to know, you are not alone!

Supporting WaveLength helps us to find suitable pathways out of loneliness.

Until…

1) Physically leaving the house is difficult or impossible

2) Socialising with new people feels overwhelming and produces anxiety

3) Connecting with people feels difficult

4) Overanalysing interactions and behaviour afterwards

5) Finding motivation is hard

Social interaction is, of course, crucial in the reduction of loneliness. However, social prescribing and community hubs are not the only way to fix the issue.

If someone is not in the right mental state to socialise in the first place, it may exacerbate the feeling of loneliness. Perhaps talking to a stranger feels scary, so rather than feeling fulfilled after the interaction, we may feel depleted.

Furthermore, for those with limited mobility, the journey from home to the hub can present significant challenges.

WaveLength recognises that loneliness is complex. We want to find suitable paths out of loneliness, rooted in a better understanding of how people actually experience it!

Why might you feel lonely even though you’re surrounded by people?

Presence doesn’t always equal “connection”. You can have a full calendar and still feel unseen.

A study (Hammoud, R., Tognin, S., Bakolis, I. et al., 2021) found that the feeling of loneliness can be “increased by overcrowding and population density”, but “decreased by perceived social inclusivity and contact with nature.”

However, regardless of how socially connected we actually are, perhaps surrounded by familiar people, friends and family, we can still experience loneliness.

A scientific review (Vitale EM, Smith AS., 2022) concluded that pre-existing loneliness can “increase sensitivity to social disconnection.” So, when these individuals socialise, the experience may feel stressful and ultimately lead to “reduced fulfilment” (Lieberz et al., 2021).

Social prescribing and community groups work for some, but they don’t work for everyone. At WaveLength, we want to find suitable paths out of loneliness, rooted in a better understanding of how people actually experience it.

📺 Our work: Hull Sisters

🌍In an increasingly digital world, access to technology is essential for inclusion, opportunity and empowerment.

💻We were proud to donate laptops to Hull Sisters, a dedicated support service for women of colour in Hull, founded by sonia jalal.

Hull Sisters now support over 1,000 women and children across Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. They provide one-to-one support, referrals, training and skills development, and ongoing care. Many of their service users are experiencing challenging circumstances, including escaping domestic abuse or having no recourse to public funds.

Thanks to the laptops, Hull Sisters now run IT support classes. Women are learning essential digital skills: setting up emails, applying for jobs, accessing vital online support services and education opportunities.

📢As Hull Sisters put it, this equips women “to live more confidently and completely in society.”

💙 We are grateful to lay a small part in supporting the incredible work Hull Sisters do every day.
