🦈Sharks have long been sought after for their meat and fins, but decades of over fishing has led to unsustainable demand.

📲 Through technology like 3D printing and apps, TRAFFIC are working directly with to track the trade of this vulnerable species and support officials in their work to halt wildlife crime and illegal trade.

Wildlife traffickers leave clues they can’t see 🧬🔬🦁

Swipe to see how DNA from tiny samples — e.g. rhino horn, elephant ivory, and tiger bone — is helping investigators tackle an illegal wildlife trade worth up to ~US$23 billion a year!

DNA analysis can help identify species, investigate where wildlife products may have come from, and reveal possible links between samples or seizures — providing valuable intelligence for law enforcement. When collected and interpreted for court, it can also support forensic evidence used in wildlife crime prosecutions.

That matters for species like pangolins, the world’s most trafficked mammals. When pangolin scales are seized, DNA is already being used to help identify the species, compare shipments, and investigate the location where these animals might've been taken.

Thanks to players of the Postcode Lottery UK, TRACE, and TRAFFIC are working to strengthen wildlife forensic capacity across Africa, helping move evidence from crime scene to lab to courtroom.

And this is already making an impact. In Zimbabwe, our partners Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust used DNA evidence to link seized lion parts to an individual lion, supporting a historic conviction.

Science can’t stop wildlife crime alone. But it can give investigators the evidence they need to help drive real change.

🦈 Ever wondered how our natural world ends up in global markets?

👟This summer, discover the Hidden World of Wildlife Trade, a free walkable trail at the Museum of Zoology in Cambridge!

🐦 The family-friendly exhibition, created by TRAFFIC, uncovers the global wildlife trade through 13 unique species, learning about markets from luxury goods to exotic pets, as well as the tools being used right now to help make the trade of natural products sustainable.

TRAFFIC would like to thank Wolfson Foundation, Arcadia, the Postcode Animal Trust and players of Postcode Lottery UK. Their generosity not only helped make the wildlife trade trail possible, but also supports vital conservation of many of the featured animals.

Ghost Fishing UK for supplying the nets for the trail’s 3D shark fin display. Their mission to collect discarded fishing gear like this from the oceans around the UK is working to help restore ocean health.

It was a great evening, full of interesting discussion, optimism and hope!

Around the world, Tom's platform Restor.eco links together groups of people who are fixing the system, and who have kicked off multiple positive feedback loops of change.
