📌 Namanga, Tanzania

Wildlife crime doesn’t stop at borders. Neither should enforcement. 🌍

In July, TRAFFIC and ifaw was pleased to welcome law enforcement and wildlife crime prosecutors from Tanzania and Kenya for three days of practical cross-border co-operation on the issue of combatting wildlife crime.

Attendees received hands-on training on the Eastern Africa Trade in Wildlife Information exchange (TWIX) platform, TRAFFIC’s Wildlife Trade Portal and emerging AI tools – learning how to share and analyze intelligence on illegal wildlife trade trends across Kenya and Tanzania.

Participants were able to share experiences, discuss ongoing threats and challenges within wildlife crime and identify areas of opportunity for collaboration – developing a cross-border action plan to improve coordinated efforts to tackle wildlife crime.

Thanks to Officials: Tanzania's National Task Force Anti-Poaching (NTAP), Tanzania's National Prosecutions Service (NPS), Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), Tanzania Revenue Authority - Customs, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), Kenya's Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Kenya's Wildlife Crime Unit, Kenya Revenue Authority – Customs and other border control authorities.

This activity was organized under European Union-funded GUARD Wildlife Project. The project works to strengthen the capacity of law enforcement agencies and promote regional cooperation in tackling illegal wildlife trade.

Poaching isn’t just an animal crisis. South Africa’s rare plant species are also under threat. 🌵💔

A report by TRAFFIC reveals that between 2019 and May 2024, law enforcement seized more than 1.6 million succulent plants representing over 650 species in South Africa. This surge in illegal harvesting is fuelled by international demand for rare and exotic succulents, with social media and online marketplaces helping connect collectors with these climate-resilient houseplants.

South Africa is home to some of the world’s most unique succulent species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. The widespread removal of these plants from the wild threatens biodiversity and can have wider impacts on the ecosystems where they grow.

You can help stop this illegal trade by making ethical choices:

🌱 Always buy succulents from accredited, legitimate nurseries that propagate plants ethically.
🌳 Avoid purchasing rare species online if the seller cannot verify their legal source.
📲 Share this post to raise awareness of this growing conservation crisis.

Together, we can help safeguard South Africa’s natural heritage. Because once wild populations disappear, they may not come back.

Millions of people rely on harvesting wild plants for their income. Wild-harvested plants underpin global supply chains, from food ingredients to medicines. But without action, many species risk disappearing from the wild.

That's why today TRAFFIC, in partnership with Biodiversify and collaborators including Global Diversity Foundation - GDF , Moroccan Biodiversity and Livelihoods Association and FairWild, has launched the Wild Harvest Improvement Project (WHIP) Framework.

Developed with support from the UK Government's Biodiversity Challenge Funds Darwin Initiative, the framework provides a clear roadmap for communities and businesses to strengthen sustainable harvesting, improve governance and support fairer trade.

Pilots in Morocco and Uzbekistan have already demonstrated its potential to deliver benefits for both people and nature.

12 Galápagos marine iguanas were found hidden in backpacks. But the seizure pointed to something much bigger.

A new investigation looks beyond individual wildlife seizures to examine how trafficking in the Galápagos can intersect with wider organised crime.

The piece, by La Barra Espaciadora and Mongabay Latam, also features TRAFFIC’s research and work helping strengthen responses to wildlife trafficking through the islands’ transport routes.

For wildlife found nowhere else on Earth, stopping trafficking before animals leave the islands can make all the difference!
