During Operation Market Garden on September 17, 1944, Pathfinders from the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), jumped into the Netherlands
Ex*****on: Unlike their covert night jump during Normandy (D-Day), Market Garden's pathfinder teams dropped in broad daylight around 12:45 PM alongside the main wave of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions.
Assignments: The 502nd PIR landed on Drop Zone B (DZ-B) northwest of Son to protect the area for subsequent glider landings, secure the road bridge over the Dommel River near Sint-Oedenrode, and capture bridges near Best
During Operation Market Garden in September 1944, the Deuce was assigned to secure the northern sector of the Allied corridor, protecting landing zones and capturing vital bridges over the Dommel and Wilhelmina canals.
Defending the Corridor: Throughout the operation, the 502nd held their defensive lines against German counterattacks trying to cut "Hell's Highway"—the main road used by the British ### Corps.
