STATEMENT ON THE RUSSO-UKRAINIAN WAR

On the 24th February 2022, at around 5.00 AM Russian Federation launched a full-scale invasion of the territory of Ukraine. We, Cambridge University Ukrainian Society, stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine against Russian military aggression and imperialism. We denounce the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian state and the annexation of Crimea and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine that continues since 2014. We condemn decisions of the Russian Federation to further violate Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and to attack Ukrainian cities. We demand the urgent withdrawal of Russia’s troops from the Ukrainian borders and territories and an end to Russian interference in Ukraine. We call on states around the world to support Ukraine with actions, and not just words. We condemn the cyberattacks, information war and fake news campaigns created and promoted by the Russian state and media. We will do everything in our power to share truthful information about Ukraine and to transform universities around the world into spaces of full and unwavering solidarity with Ukraine and its people.

CAMBRIDGE4UKRAINE

To help Ukrainian people suffering from the Russo-Ukrainian war, the members of the Cambridge University Ukrainian Society - Andrii Smytsniuk, Olenka Dmytryk, Anatolii Pavlovskyi, and Stepan Blinder - co-founded the volunteering initiative Cambridge4Ukraine. Cambridge4Ukraine is a public initiative that aims diverse support to Ukrainian refugees approaching Cambridge and Cambridgeshire. On the one hand, it has a well-shaped contact with local political, religious, and social authorities and promotes Ukraine to the local community. On the other hand, the initiative helps Ukrainians with the Sponsorship visa applications (“Homes for Ukraine”) as well as with further adaptation into the local community of Cambridge and Cambridgeshire: English learning, search for job, cultural acclimatization and so on. At CUUS, we like to think we know a thing or two about friendships.

Because let’s be honest, none of us would have survived 9am lectures, deadlines, or character-building group projects without them. Friends are our support system, and, occasionally, the source of unsolicited criticism.

So naturally, CUUS fully supports building more friendships - this time, between cities.

Together with other Ukrainian and international organisations in Cambridge, we’re backing an initiative to twin Cambridge with a city in Ukraine.
This is a real opportunity for long-term collaboration in education, innovation, and community building. At a time when many Ukrainians have been displaced, connections like these matter more than ever.

And we need your help.
Sign the petition (link in bio/comments), share it with your friends, your supervisors, your group chats, and even that one person who never replies ;)

We also welcome your suggestions for a Ukrainian city to twin with Cambridge in the comments!

Let’s help Cambridge make a really good friend. 💙💛

As we wrap up Lent Term, it feels like the perfect moment to look back on two wonderful CUUS events that brought our community together over the past few weeks 💙💛

On 16 March, CUUS members unleashed their creativity and immersed themselves in Ukrainian culture at our Pysanky workshop. It was such an evening full of colour, concentration, and conversation as everyone carefully created their own traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs, each carrying its own patterns and meanings. A huge thank you to our Art and Music Officer, Yevheniia Frankevych, for leading the workshop with so much care and creativity.

Later in the month, we had the pleasure of welcoming many of you to our Ukrainian wine tasting — an evening of discovery, great company, and celebration of Ukraine’s rich and often overlooked wine culture. It was incredibly special to explore Ukrainian wines together and share stories, reflections, and laughter in such a warm atmosphere.

Our sincere thanks go to wine expert Tanya Olevska from the Ukrainian Wine Company UK and the Cambridge University Blind Wine Tasting Society for their support in making this event possible.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this term and helped make these moments so memorable.

If we had to choose three emojis to describe our 25th Anniversary Celebration, those would probably be: 🎉🇺🇦🥂

However, they still won’t even come close to conveying the multitude of emotions of the evening: long-awaited alumni reunions, laughter at insider jokes, unexpected connections, math debates (yep, this is Cambridge), loud toasts, sentimental speeches and a few behind-the-scenes stressful moments (a special nod to the CUUS committee).

But above all, it was unity.

People from different cities, universities, and corners of Ukraine and the UK came together to share something deeper: time, memory, and belonging. At CUUS, we believe it is exactly these moments that grow into lifelong friendships, collaborations, and communities.

We were honoured to welcome 140 guests, including CUUS members, alumni, the Society's founders, and Cambridge academics.

It was especially meaningful to be joined by friends from more than 17 Ukrainian societies across the UK: .ua, , .ua, .ukr, .ukraine, .ukraine, , .ukr.soc, , LSE, UAL, Newcastle, Warwick, Anglia Ruskin, Sheffield, Dundee, Bristol, and representatives from .fr.

We are deeply grateful to our partners - Cambridge Ukrainian Studies, Sterling Law, and for their support in making this evening possible.

A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful photographers, Peter Nixon and , for capturing moments we will carry with us long after.

As the 2025–2026 CUUS Committee signs off, we want to thank everyone who has supported us - our colleagues, partners, and friends. Your trust, advice, and presence have meant more than we can put into words. Together, we are strengthening our Ukrainian diaspora in the UK.

And to all those who came before us: thank you. We stand on your foundations, even as we shape our own path.
Because CUUS is people.
It is you.

The next chapter will belong to those who choose to write it.

Yours,
2025-2026 CUUS Committee

If the most creative things in your daily Cambridge routine are doodling during your lectures or inventing excuses for submitting your supervision work late, then we invite you to join our Pysanky workshop!

Date: March 16
Time: 15:00-17:00 (please arrive 15 minutes earlier)
Place: St Andrew’s Hall, St Andrew's Rd, Chesterton, Cambridge CB4 1DH

Pysanky are traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs decorated using a wax-resist method. Their designs hold deep symbolism, featuring geometric patterns, stylized nature symbols (e.g. sun, ram's horns, flowers), and Christian motifs.

During this workshop we will use the tradtional painting method, drawning symbols with molten beeswax using a kistka too.

All materials will be provided.

Spaces are very limited - register your attendance via the link in our bio.

Event Recap: 2000 Meters to Andriivka

On 27 February, we gathered at Bateman Auditorium for a screening of 2000 Meters to Andriivka, followed by an in-person discussion with the film’s co-producer and Associated Press reporter, Alex Babenko.

To say the least, the documentary was powerful, leaving the audience silent and focused during and after the screening. Through raw frontline footage, it confronted us with the exhaustion, fear, and moral weight carried by Ukrainian soldiers fighting for every metre of land.

The discussion further demonstrated the impact of the documentary. The audience was highly engaged, asking thoughtful and challenging questions about the realities of reporting from the frontlines, the emotional toll of documenting war, and the responsibility of preserving truth. We thank Alex for his honest, direct, and human answers, which offered insights into both the filmmaking process and the lived experiences behind the camera.

We thank everyone who joined us and contributed to this meaningful event.

Our special thanks extend to our partners, Cambridge4Ukraine and Gonville and Caius Law Society, and to our committee member, Yuriy Uhryn, for seeing this event through.

Ukraine’s International Legal Agenda⚖️

Last Friday, 20 February 2026, in collaboration with the POLIS Society, we had the honour of welcoming Justin Esiobu, Third Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, to Cambridge.

Justin spoke about Ukraine’s evolving international legal strategy, including the ongoing Ukraine v Russia proceedings before the ICJ, the establishment of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine, and the creation of the International Claims Commission.

The discussion was particularly insightful given that Justin and his team have been directly involved in these processes, including the drafting of the Agreement between the Council of Europe and Ukraine on the Special Tribunal and the Convention establishing the International Claims Commission, which is designed to assess and compensate damage caused by Russia’s invasion.

We are grateful to POLIS Society, and especially to Rade, for hosting and moderating the event. Special thanks to our team member Yuriy Uhryn for coordinating the visit of the Ukrainian delegation to Cambridge.
