Last week Tuesday we welcomed Yu Jialan to Cambridge to discuss the behind-the-scenes realities of working as a journalist in China. We discussed autonomy over publishing, balancing cultural contexts, and dealing with online criticism. Thinking like journalists, we even learned a thing or two about sneaking into colleges at ‘the other place’. Overall, the event was a great success.

Thank you to everyone for coming!

Join us on the 19th March for a Fireside Chat with Professor Bryna Goodman, in collaboration with the Cambridge University Japan Forum!

This talk highlights the local and global politics that underlaid the early formation of Chinese stock exchanges, examining the emergence of Japanese colonial exchanges on Chinese territory, shortly after the formalization of a Shanghai British stock exchange in 1905. Although Chinese investments on the British exchange facilitated preliminary habituation to exchange-based share trading, Japanese financial imperialism more deeply shaped Chinese exchange formation, as the nationalist imperative to create competitive Chinese institutions necessitated contradictory reliance on Japanese advisers, partners, and capital.

Join us on the 10th March as we welcome Yu Jialan, an award-winning reporter and businesswoman.

Yu began her career as a journalist with Global Times and China International Communications Group (CICG), a foreign-language publishing and communications organisation. She later worked as a writer and host for CICG’s weekly program Top Five in China, covering major developments in China’s economy, politics, and military affairs, reaching an audience of over 10 million viewers worldwide.

In 2017, Yu received the China News Award, presented by the State Publicity Department, in recognition of her outstanding reporting. Following her journalism career, she transitioned into the corporate sector, serving as Head of the CEO’s Office at Société Générale, one of Europe’s leading financial services groups.

In 2020, Yu was awarded Peking University’s highest scholarship for its MBA program. Today, as a single mother of two, she is the founder of Upsnail Public Speaking Academy, a Beijing-based business dedicated to empowering students through effective communication.

We had a great evening hosting Alice Han, China Director at Greenmantle and host of the China Decode podcast, on the 11th February. Alice joined us for a Fireside Chat, sharing her extensive expertise on Chinese geopolitics, history, culture, and economics. The conversation ranged from semi-conductors to the cultural notion of ‘slow living’. It was particularly enlightening to learn about figures in Chinese intellectual history whom Alice suggested were under-read outside of China but whose ideas continue to shape political and social ideas in China. We were also lucky to hear about Alice’s experience as a contestant on MasterChef Australia in 2023!

Thank you once again to Alice and to all who joined our discussion!

On Wednesday, CUCF welcomed Jon Geldart, Director General of the Institute of Directors, to Cambridge. We learned about working directly with both the Chinese and UK governments, brokering relationships between Chinese and British businesses, and what it means to be a business leader. Beyond that, Jon also gave us a glimpse into the thrilling life of a director (— think rally racing and trekking across the North Pole).

Thank you, Jon Geldart, for joining us. We look forward to hearing about your future adventures!
