"Me and Charlie are like best friends as much as we're Nanny and Grandson."

More than 20 years ago, Jan began volunteering in our Caerphilly store. Years later, she introduced her grandson Charlie to the shop, hoping it might help him build confidence and meet new people.

As an autistic young person, Charlie found volunteering daunting at first. When he first joined the team, he struggled with eye contact, talking to others and stepping outside of his comfort zone. But with encouragement from Jan and support from the welcoming team around him, he gradually began to thrive.

Today, Charlie chats confidently with customers, works on the till and gained confidence to start driving, passing his driving test first time. He has built lasting friendships through volunteering and even met his girlfriend, a fellow volunteer at the store.

For Jan, watching Charlie grow in confidence has been one of her proudest experiences. And for Charlie, volunteering has not only given him new skills and independence, but strengthened the bond he shares with his nan, "Volunteering is the best choice I have made. I get to spend more time with my nan and have made a lot of friends."

This Grandparents Day, we're celebrating the grandparents who, just like Jan, encourage us, champion us and help us believe in ourselves. 💕

“I felt like a rabbit caught in headlights. I had so many questions, but nobody could tell me whether Leo would live.”

When Leo's heart condition was discovered during his mum Emma's 20-week pregnancy scan, nobody could tell them what the future would hold. Doctors later confirmed that Leo had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare congenital heart condition where the left side of the heart doesn't develop properly. After he was born, they discovered an additional complication, a severely leaky tricuspid valve.

At just one week old, Leo underwent his first open-heart surgery. What followed were months in hospital, failed attempts to come off a ventilator, difficulties gaining weight, tube feeding, and years of treatment. But throughout it all, Leo kept proving people wrong, with Emma saying, “Even as a baby, his determination was clear."

In August 2025, Leo underwent his third open-heart surgery. Before the operation, he often felt breathless, struggled to keep up with other children and had oxygen levels of around 78 to 80 per cent. Today, the difference is extraordinary.

"Leo now feels like he is flying. He is back at school, full of energy and convinced he is going to win sports day. His physical ability may still be behind other children because he spent so long unable to join in, but he feels amazing in himself."

Now aged seven, Leo has been recognised as one of our Young Heart Heroes for his courage, resilience and determination. Emma documents family life online as a content creator and is also one of our Retail Ambassadors, but sharing their story is about something bigger to her. "I want to offer hope to families who may be where we once were. Even when you have been told there is very little hope, Leo shows that a child can still have a good life. If sharing his story makes a difference to one family, it is worth it."

"I feel it is my purpose to raise awareness and support research that could have a positive impact on Leo and the life he gets to lead. We are so thankful for how well he is doing, and his resilience continues to amaze us."

We are deeply saddened by the death of Dame Esther Rantzen. Esther was not only one of Britain's most loved broadcasters and campaigners, she was also a cherished supporter and ambassador for British Heart Foundation.

After losing her beloved husband Desmond Wilcox to heart disease in 2000, Esther turned her own experience of grief into a determination to help others. She gave her time, energy and voice to us for many years, helping raise awareness of heart disease and supporting the search for better treatments and cures through research.

Esther had a genuine curiosity about science and a deep belief in its power to change lives. She took the time to meet BHF-funded researchers in their labs, learn about their work and champion the hope that research brings to people and families affected by cardiovascular disease.

What stood out most was her kindness and generosity. Esther celebrated our amazing volunteers by hosting a special afternoon tea to recognise their huge contribution, and she supported our work in countless other ways, from attending fundraising events to donating to her local BHF shop. She even helped us smash a Guinness World Record for the longest chain of paper hearts by adding her own heartfelt message of support.

Esther touched the lives of so many people through her work, her campaigning and her unwavering commitment to helping others. We are enormously grateful for her support for BHF and our thoughts are with her family and friends.

Words from our Chief Executive, Dr Charmaine Griffiths. ❤️

At 17, Jack survived a cardiac arrest.

Now age 19, he lives with an ICD and has learned that he has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), an inherited heart muscle condition.

Recently, Jack met Professor Hugh Watkins, the scientist who first identified the gene linked to his heart condition and who is now leading groundbreaking research to help find a cure.

This World Heart Day, we're celebrating research that gives hope to millions of people living with cardiovascular disease.

Together, we're funding the discoveries that could change lives for generations to come. ❤️

"It was hard for her being attached to a machine for so many months, but there was no choice. She would not have survived without it."

When Beatrix was just 15 months old, her parents knew something wasn't quite right. She had become breathless and was struggling to eat and drink, so mum Cheryl and dad Terry took her to hospital. But what doctors discovered was far more serious.

An echocardiogram revealed that Beatrix had dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that makes it harder for the heart to pump blood around the body, and she was already in end-stage heart failure.

Beatrix was rushed to hospital, where doctors worked tirelessly to stabilise her. But just days later, she suffered a cardiac arrest. To save her life, surgeons carried out emergency surgery to fit a Berlin Heart, a mechanical heart pump that would keep her alive while she waited for a transplant.

For 14 months, Beatrix lived in hospital attached to a machine. Every day brought uncertainty, while her family hoped for the call that could change everything. Then, in June 2023, when Beatrix was two and a half years old, that call finally came. A donor heart had been found.

"The recovery after the transplant was remarkable," says Terry. "She was back home with us and her big sister Eliza after just a month."

Today, Beatrix is five years old and full of life. She's started school, loves making memories with her family and is enjoying all the things children should.

"Bea loves life," says Terry. "We feel so very lucky and cannot express our gratitude enough to the family who consented to organ donation."

This week, Beatrix is being recognised at our Young Heart Hero Awards, celebrating the courage and determination she has shown throughout her young life. ❤️
