Happy 100th Birthday, Sir David Attenborough 🌿

From all of us at Calverhall in Bloom, we celebrate not just a remarkable milestone, but a lifetime devoted to helping the world see — and value — the beauty of the natural world.

For decades, through landmark series such as Life on Earth, The Private Life of Plants, and The Green Planet, you have brought the hidden lives of plants into focus — revealing their complexity, resilience, and quiet importance to all life on Earth. Your work has inspired generations to look more closely at the green spaces around them, from ancient forests to community gardens.

As a horticultural group, we are especially grateful for the way you have elevated the story of plants — not as background scenery, but as dynamic, essential life forms that shape our planet and sustain biodiversity. Your voice has helped deepen public understanding of ecosystems, pollinators, and the urgent need to protect habitats.

Here in Calverhall, that inspiration lives on in every flower bed tended, every tree planted, and every effort to create greener, more welcoming spaces for people and wildlife alike.

With sincere thanks for your extraordinary legacy — and for continuing to inspire care, curiosity, and action.

Happy 100th Birthday.

We’re absolutely delighted to share that Calverhall In Bloom has been shortlisted for the BBC Make a Difference Awards 2026 in the Community Group Award category — recognising groups who help change lives within their community. 🌼

As part of the judging process, the BBC will be visiting our village on the morning of Wednesday 13th May to film our volunteers, the beautiful planters we maintain, and our wonderful community in general.

We’d love your help to get Calverhall looking its blooming best before the cameras arrive! 🌷

This weekend, we’re asking residents to join our Curbside Cleanup by:

🧹 Sweeping pavements
🌱 Pulling w**ds
🌸 Tidying front gardens and planters
🗑️ Picking up litter
💚 Giving the village a little extra love

Every small effort will make a huge difference and help showcase the pride we all have in our community.

Let’s come together and make Calverhall shine for the BBC! 🌼✨

🌿✨ Spring on Our Doorstep ✨🌿

Out along our local pathways this week, we’ve been reminded just how much life is quietly unfolding all around us. The hedgerows and verges are bursting into growth — a rich mix of textures, colours, and species that many of us walk past every day without a second glance.

Not so long ago, these plants wouldn’t have been overlooked. People knew them — not just their names, but their uses, their seasons, and their place in everyday life. Food, medicine, materials… all growing freely on the doorstep.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve lost a little of that connection. But spring is the perfect time to start noticing again 🌱

Along just a short stretch, we spotted:

💚 Cleavers clambering through the hedge
💚 Fresh nettles pushing up (nutrient powerhouses!)
💚 Purple dead-nettle feeding early pollinators
💚 Dandelions lighting up the path
💚 Hairy bittercress popping up in the gravel
💚 Pineapple w**d in compacted ground (if you know, you know 👃🍍)
💚 Clovers building soil and feeding bees
💚 Hawthorn leaves just emerging — the hedgerow waking up

It’s all there — wild, useful, and deeply connected to our shared history.

So we’ve put together a little Hedgerow Hunt (see poster below 👇) — something simple to take on your walks and help reconnect with what’s growing around you.

🌼 How many can you spot?
We’d love to see what you find — feel free to tick them off, take photos, and share in the comments!

🌍 A gentle reminder…
These “w**ds” are anything but. They are food, medicine, habitat, and history — and learning them is a small step back toward understanding the natural world.

⚠️ Foraging disclaimer:
Always be 100% certain of identification before consuming anything. Some plants have toxic lookalikes. When in doubt, consult a qualified expert or use multiple trusted sources — never rely on a single reference.

🌱 Let’s celebrate the wild plants on our doorstep — and start learning their stories again, together.

A big thank you to our wonderful volunteers who helped clean up the planters and the Little Library today!

Your time and effort made a huge difference — everything looks so much tidier, brighter, and more welcoming for everyone in the community. 📚🌸

During the tidy-up, we did have to remove quite a few books that were not suitable for the library, including some that were heavily damaged. Please could we kindly ask that the Little Library isn’t used as a dumping ground. If you’re donating, we’d really appreciate books that are in good, clean condition for others to enjoy.

Damaged or unsuitable books can usually be recycled in household paper recycling (paperbacks, or hardbacks with covers removed), so please consider recycling them instead. ♻️

We also found a number of books belonging to public libraries. These should always be returned to their original libraries rather than placed in our Little Library.

We really appreciate everyone’s support — and of course, another big thank you to our volunteers for their hard work! 💚

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mums, grandmothers, and mother figures who help our lives grow 🌸

In the language of flowers, every bloom carries a message. Soft pink roses speak of gratitude and admiration, lilies symbolise devotion, and carnations—especially the pink ones—have long been associated with a mother’s enduring love.

Just like a garden, the love and care of a mother helps everything around her flourish. Today we celebrate the patience, strength, and kindness that nurture families and communities every day.

Wishing all mums a beautiful Mother’s Day filled with flowers, sunshine, and appreciation 💐

🌸 Check out this lovely piece of garden advice from Watch Gardening 👇

If you’re thinking about improving a garden path or walkway this year, this is well worth a read. It shows how a simple path can be transformed into something far more inviting — almost like a storybook garden.

A few ideas that really stood out:

🌿 Add gentle curves
A winding path instantly makes a garden feel more relaxed and spacious.

🪨 Start with proper groundwork
A solid gravel base and neat edging keep everything looking tidy and long-lasting.

🌸 Introduce an arch or focal point
Placing an arbor or arch along the route creates a real sense of arrival.

🌺 Plant in layers for that full cottage-garden look
Taller plants behind, softer planting spilling towards the path.

🌷 Keep interest through the seasons
Mixing spring, summer and late-season flowers means colour lasts far longer.

🪑 Include somewhere to sit
Even a simple bench turns a walkway into a place to pause and enjoy the garden.

It’s a great reminder that thoughtful design — not necessarily a bigger space — makes all the difference.

Transform an Ordinary Walkway Into a Storybook Garden Path

A storybook path never runs straight from point A to point B. Gently curve the walkway so it disappears slightly from view, inviting curiosity. Even subtle bends make a small yard feel layered and expansive.

Design the route before planting so everything frames the experience.

Build a Stable Gravel Foundation

Excavate the path area and install a compacted crushed stone base. Top with fine gravel that drains well and remains comfortable underfoot.

Edge the path with steel, stone, or brick to keep lines clean and prevent gravel from spreading into beds.

Create a Garden Archway Moment

Install a wooden arbor or arch at a natural pause along the path. Position it where the walkway narrows or curves for maximum impact.

An arch instantly transforms a simple walkway into a destination.

Plant in Generous Layers

Place taller perennials toward the back of beds and medium height bloomers near the path edge. Fill the front with low growing groundcovers that spill softly onto the gravel.

Layering creates fullness and gives the path a lush, enveloping feel.

Choose Long Season Bloomers

Mix spring bulbs, early summer perennials, and late season flowers so color evolves throughout the year. Include varieties like delphinium, salvia, foxglove, cosmos, and hardy geranium for continuous interest.

Succession planting keeps the walkway vibrant beyond a single season.

Add Fragrance and Texture

Incorporate lavender, roses, or sweet alyssum where visitors brush past. Ornamental grasses and fine textured foliage provide contrast against bold blooms.

Texture makes the design feel rich rather than flat.

Improve Soil for Strong Roots

Amend planting beds with generous compost to build structure and support deep root systems. Healthy living soil allows plants to thrive naturally and fill in beautifully over time.

Strong roots anchor the design.

Tuck in Seating

Place a simple bench beneath a tree or near the arch to create a quiet resting point. Seating turns a pathway into a garden room.

A place to pause completes the story.

Maintain Clean Edges and Abundance

Refresh compost annually, trim back overcrowded plants, and keep path edges defined. Allow flowers to grow generously but prevent them from overwhelming the walkway.

With thoughtful curves, layered planting, and a welcoming arch, an ordinary walkway becomes a storybook garden path that feels immersive, colorful, and timeless.

🌱 Jobs to Do in the Garden This March (Perfect for Beginners!) 🌷

March is when the garden really starts to wake up after winter — longer days, warmer soil, and the first signs of spring growth everywhere.

If you’re new to gardening, don’t worry — you don’t need to do everything at once. A few simple jobs now will set your garden up beautifully for the months ahead.

Here’s what to focus on this month 👇

🌿 1. Tidy & Prepare Your Beds
Pull out young w**ds before they take over and add a layer of compost or mulch to feed your soil and lock in moisture.

🥔 2. Start Growing Easy Veg
March is ideal for beginners to plant:
• Early potatoes
• Onion sets & shallots
• Peas or broad beans

🌸 3. Plant Summer-Flowering Bulbs
Want colour later in the year? Plant dahlias, lilies or gladioli now for stunning summer flowers.

✂️ 4. Prune & Cut Back
Trim roses and remove dead or damaged stems from shrubs to encourage fresh, healthy growth.

🪴 5. Refresh Pots & Containers
Replace the top layer of old compost in pots with fresh compost — an easy way to give plants a spring boost.

🐌 6. Watch for Slugs & Snails
New shoots are a favourite snack! Check plants regularly and protect young growth early.

🌱 7. Give the Lawn Its First Cut
If grass is growing, mow on a dry day — but keep the blades high for the first few cuts.

✨ Beginner tip:
You don’t need a perfect garden — just start small and enjoy being outside. Every little job you do now makes spring and summer easier (and more colourful!).
