Last night was our monthly meeting. Calne Lions President, Jonathan was pleased to badge up another new Lion. Welcome to Lions, Geoff.

We were also joined by Lions 1st Vice District Governor, Mark Cooper, who spoke to the Club and presented various items to members, including a certificate to mark 3 years' Service to Lion Jo.

Our meetings are held at Beversbrook Sports Facility and the cost of the room hire is covered by the generous grant Calne Lions were awarded by Calne Town Council.

We may only have just escaped yet another heatwave, but Santa is still thinking ahead and preparing for Christmas!

He'd like to say a huge thank you to Tans sewing shop for giving his big red suit a once over and making sure its all ready for when he joins us in December for our tour of the town (the elves were on their summer holidays, so couldn't do it).

🎶 Santa Claus is coming to town 🎶 ... tomorrow (Friday).

He'll be visiting The Rec, Wessington Playground and North End Playground and he's bringing gifts... free ice cream.

Get there early and find Santa's elves, who will be giving out ice cream vouchers.

Calne Lions have been happy to support Calne Wordfest and give a grant towards the ice creams.

Calne Lions are pleased to be collaborating with Calne Wordfest.

Santa (who is on his Summer Holidays) will be telling stories at Calne Recreation Ground, Wessington Play Area and Northend Play Area on 21st August and how better to enjoy the summer than with some free ice cream.

Santa's Elves will be at the parks, handing out vouchers on the day, which can be exchanged for a tasty treat!

Each year Calne Lions take to the streets to collect money on behalf of other groups and charities.

We regularly don the yellow tabards and daffodil hats to collect for Marie Curie and also support The Royal British Legion with their poppy appeal.

At the recent Calne Bike Meet, we helped out Calne WI by running a fundraising stall on their behalf and were able to give them £300, which will help with their ongoing running costs.

In the past we have also collected money for the Lions Club International Foundation, which steps in sending aid to areas affected by disaster.

Over the years Calne Lions has organised a variety of events, ranging from coffee mornings to fundraising Balls.

In the last year we have branched out and begun hosting Prostate Screenings, something that we as a club have felt strongly about for a while.

Thanks to the generosity of Calne Town Council we have received funding to help us organise our upcoming screening event in September and a further event in the new year.

If you are (or know of) a gentleman over 40 years of age, we only have a few slots left to be booked for the upcoming Prostate Screening Event on Saturday 5th September.

Find out more by heading over to our website www.calnelions.org/prostate-screening

Over the years, Calne Lions have enjoyed “getting our hands dirty” with more hands on help in the community.

We have put our green fingers to good use doing gardening for local care homes and a few years ago we completely refitted the kitchen in the Guide Hut.

We are always on the look out for ways we can offer practical help. If your group or organisation is in need of support, please get in touch via [email protected] or through the contact us page on our website www.calnelions.org

Kennet Gateway Club is a social outlet for adults with learning difficulties; bringing people together, enabling social inclusion and autonomy. Gateway offers their members various activities, including skittles, bingo, discos and pool.

Throughout the year, members of Calne Lions es**rt many of our friends from Mill Race to the club in Woodborough. We are able to do this thanks to Calne Community Transport, who let us use one of their minibuses for the evening.

Our Lions members enjoy our fortnightly catch ups with our Gateway friends.

Calne Lions participate in a national Lions campaign to collect old glasses so that they can be recycled and repurposed.

Glasses that are suitable for recycling are forwarded on to various charities based in the UK and abroad who make use of these recycled spectacles, supplying them to those in need.

Like the glasses, we collect old, unused or broken digital and analogue hearing aids so that they can also be reconditioned and repurposed. Adults and children with hearing impairment whose lives have been transformed after receiving recycled hearing equipment live in many overseas countries including Mexico, Peru, Lesotho, Madagascar, Ukraine, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Philippines and Papua New Guinea.

We also collect unused or unwanted bras in conjunction with Breast Cancer UK.

If you have any items to donate, you can email us on [email protected] or use the contact us page on our website, using the “Glasses and Hearing Aids” option in the Enquiry Subject.
