Normally, Guide camp is notorious for its unpredictable weather, and we are well versed in packing for rain, wind and the occasional burst of sunshine. Thank goodness we still prepare for the latter, as this Guide camp over the first weekend of half term was the hottest I have ever experienced in 30 years.
Nonetheless, with a motto of ‘be prepared’, the Guides, Leaders and Volunteers adapted and carried on with the exciting activities we had planned. From crate stacking to archery and tunnelling, the onsite activities were a real hit with the Guides – even if I did end up constructing a shelter behind the archery range to protect them from the sun.
A day out in Cirencester saw the girls taking part in a scavenger hunt around the town, tracking down answers to cryptic questions. One adapted activity that was universally popular was the water fight and slip ’n’ slide – perfect for the heat.
More traditional activities were also enjoyed, including square lashing for their patrol pennants, cooking dinner over open fires, and a lovely campfire on the final evening – complete with s’mores and roasted marshmallows.
Guides from 4th Calne and the town-based unit of 1st Calne had the opportunity to make new friends, as well as learn new skills together. Perhaps the biggest adventure came on the final night, when it was warm enough for the girls to sleep under the stars if they chose to. Wrapped up in layers and protected with tarpaulins from the morning dew, many said it was the best night’s sleep they’d had all week.
Thank you so much to all the volunteers who made this wonderful annual trip happen. While it involves a great deal of work, it is the kind of experience that leaves girls with lasting memories and friendships. Finally, congratulations go to this year’s Leader in Charge, Katherine Stone from 1st Calne Guides and 2nd Calne Rainbows, who organised this fantastic camp as part of gaining her Going Away With Licence, a Girlguiding qualification that is notoriously challenging to achieve.
