Yesterday I was called out to a local address after a lady had found 2 hoglets peeping. After a quick assessment it appears mum had left the hoglets due to activity happening nearby. However later we found out a large hog had been run over on the main road down into Pensilva, likey to be mum unfortunately.
Both have been hydrated and fed and are looking good so far. Feeding is every 2 hrs and fluids in this heat is essential.
Huffy & Puffy are a handful, and very time consuming, but it's a privilege to help these tiny hoglets.
Its early days and hoglets can get bloat very easily which is life threatening. Cross your fingers and watch for videos of their progress,

Some snapshots from the wildlife cameras at our Callington site 🦔📷 If you want to help wildlife in your own gardens please put out shallow dishes of water at ground level 🙏💧 Hedgehogs need fresh water everyday and it really can save a life. You can support feed them by leaving out kitten biscuits or meaty cat or dog food. Make sure to clean the bowls daily. We are so lucky to have these majestic creatures visit our gardens and there is plenty we can do to help them 🦔

This time of year you may see or hear hedgehog courtship in your gardens. Hedgehog courtship is one of the most distinctive mating behaviours seen in mammals. 🦔❤️🦔

During the breeding season (typically April to September), a male hedgehog will find a female and begin following her closely. The female often walks in circles, changes direction, huffs, grunts, and may even head-butt the male. The male persistently follows her, circling around her repeatedly.
This circling behaviour can continue for hours. This was going on for over three hours in our garden at our Callington site last night.

People often mistake courtship for a fight because courting hedgehogs can be surprisingly noisy.
Actual fights, usually between males, tend to be much more aggressive and involve loud snorts, charging, and attempts to bite.

Female hedgehogs are not monogamous. A litter can potentially have multiple fathers, meaning hoglets from the same nest may be half-siblings. 🦔🦔🦔
Keep and eye and ear out for this in your own gardens but always watch from a suitable distance and do not disturb them.
