We are incredibly concerned to hear that The University of Edinburgh is intending to close courses at Edinburgh College of Art . Several of our Saturday Club members, who we have helped start their creative journey, fully intended to apply to ECA. And it seems this opportunity will be taken away from them. Another photo from our team trip to Edinburgh on Saturday, this time from our visit to Gerry at Art Brut Gerry Gapinski . His work is endlessly inspiring. He takes old garments, recycles them with real imagination, and then transforms them through screen printing so they become something completely new. There’s a brilliant sense of play in everything he makes, and you can feel how much joy goes into each piece.

Gerry himself was an absolute delight to chat with. Siobhan and the girls loved speaking with him about his process and the stories behind his designs, and it was one of those moments that reminds you why creative communities matter so much :-)

Which kilt strap would you choose?
We’ve just sent this photo to our customer to see which kilt straps she would like to choose.

The top two are handmade by Mackenzie Leather Edinburgh and the bottom one was most likely made in a factory (I don’t know where they are sourced from). The Mackenzie straps are more expensive, but I think they are *so* worth it. It was an absolute joy to bring some of our Saturday club students over on Saturday to see how the straps are made

If you are in Edinburgh before mid January next year, then I highly suggest spending a few hours at Dovecot Studios and visiting the absolutely mind blowing Cosprop exhibition. The exhibition opened yesterday and a group of us went along (we also did lots of other fun stuff which I will be sharing over the coming days) and our minds were blown. As someone who studies old clothes academically, I was extremely impressed by the authenticity and attention to detail. We had a lovely chat with the curator of the exhibition, Keith Lodwick, and he gave some fantastic advice to our Saturday Club members about how to start out in the industry. Our Saturday Club members are preparing for their Bronze Arts Award, and I can’t wait to read their reviews of the exhibition.

We are now almost two‑thirds of the way through our pilot for project, and we are preparing to apply for further funding so we can continue and expand this work. To do that, we need to show funders that there is genuine interest from across Scotland.

We want to hear from Armed Forces veterans, Blue Light Services retirees, and their families. We firmly believe that families of service personnel also serve (not at all biased here as the daughter of a retired police officer!) If you are interested in learning a new skill that you may genuinely enjoy—and that could even open up an alternative career path—we would love to hear from you.

We are exploring a range of options and locations for future courses, so wherever you are in Scotland, you can register your interest via the QR code or at www.lamhan.scot.

Mum Caitlin has finished her very first kilt for her son Boyd — who turns six months old today. She hadn’t sewn before joining our Monday morning group, but decided to give it a go and has worked steadily each week on this special project for her wee boy. It’s been lovely watching her progress while sharing plenty of cuddles with Boyd. He’s growing quickly so it won’t be long before Caitlin takes down the hem to make the kilt last a bit longer!

Could your young person be interested in learning to sew?

After a successful pilot group this past academic year, Làmhan is now looking to roll out our FREE Saturday sewing programme for young people aged 12–18 in other areas of Scotland.

The programme gives young people the opportunity to build practical sewing skills, learn to make and repair their own clothes, and work towards making their first kilt, with support from experienced tutors. There may also be opportunities for young people to work towards nationally recognised qualifications as they develop their skills.

We’re currently looking at where there is the most demand across the Central Belt of Scotland and the Inverness/Highland region.

If you’re a parent or carer of a young person who might be interested, please take a few minutes to complete our short survey.

Your response will help us decide where to roll out the programme next and support our funding applications to make it happen.

No experience needed. Free to take part. Open to ages 12–18.

This afternoon I had the privilege of joining the Highland Veterans meeting — a brilliant chance to connect with people who care deeply about supporting veterans, their families and the wider Armed Forces family (and not forgetting blue light services as well!).

I chatted with representatives from the MOD, Erskine, Combat Stress, the Rothiemurchus Estate, councillors from Highland Council, and of course Help for Heroes. I’m hopeful about the opportunities that will come from today’s conversations.

A special, huge thank you to Jane from Help for Heroes Help for Heroes , who organised the event so thoughtfully and made everyone feel welcome.
