Update from Ludlow Trotting Association & Severn Valley Trotting
21/04/20
Firstly, I hope that you and your families are keeping well.
I thought maybe a good time to update on COVID-19 situation regarding our fixtures in July.
The announcement last Thursday of at least another three weeks of restrictions was inevitable, but also helps put focus on the work we can do to ensure an appropriate racing recommencement.
There remains a huge number of unknowns which means that any plan will have to remain dependent on timing and the way the government restrictions will be lifted.
At this present moment July fixtures look doubtful, but working together there is hope we can salvage the back end of the 2020 fixtures.
Both committees are open to running joint meetings with previously cancelled fixtures if they were still keen. We are open to suggestions on ideas. This would help financially and with other key factors.
For example
• Will we be able to procure appropriate medical cover?
• Will our volunteer base be comfortable and willing to take up their roles again? We have to consider that they may not want to volunteer until the situation stabilizes.
• Will contractor used to support events still be able to supply the service we need?
• Are there rules that we need to review in order to enable us to resume racing – valid insurance in the current COVID 19 situation? Social distancing the measures we can take to limit close social contact on the day and setting up. It is likely that many people will feel safer to compete again knowing we are putting these measures in place.
• Restrictions on public gatherings – what would a restriction in numbers mean and how we could operate.
Also we do not know how many people do want to race or a position to do so during this period so member’s feedback is appreciated as setting a race day fixture takes time to organise, if the likely hood of not enough entries then proceeding is not viable to run a meeting.
Usual local sponsorship is not expected due to the strain on business.
Public attendance is also dependent on the government restrictions and confidence of social distancing.
We will also wait a decision on Wales & Borders Harness Racing Association to advise further on going forward as an association. As it stands due to commence in July.
We do not know what the future holds, but we will come out of this and hopefully working together racing will resume again. The scenarios are changing daily.
We will update after this lock down period has ended.
Take care, stay safe.
