It's

Pioneer Sergeant Major William 'Bill' Street sailed to Normandy in June 1944 as part of the 4th Btn, Royal Welch Fusiliers aboard the liberty ship “Cotton Mather.” The Cotton Mather sailed in convoy with 40 other ships, with US aircraft providing fighter cover. Bill fought his way across Europe, through the Normandy Breakout to the capture of S’Hertogenbosch, the Ardennes, and weeks fighting in the Reichswald Forest and the Rhineland battles.

He was described as “prodding for mines all the way from Normandy to the North Sea.”

Bill later transferred to the 1st Btn and served as a Corporal Storeman in D Company in Wavell Barracks, Berlin. Later posted to the West Indies, Bill was promoted to become the Pioneer Sergeant and would henceforth lead the Battalion on parade and ceremonial occasions, meeting many VIPs. Uniquely entitled to wear a beard, his magnificent red beard became famous throughout the Army. He was awarded the British Empire Medal for his service in Cyprus, and was a well loved Old Comrade.

Happy International Archives Day!

Working in military heritage means getting hands-on with history, be it contemporary, more recent conflicts or events dating back some 300 years. Thanks to our commitment of preserving the past, the stories connected to our regiment will live on for future generations

And for all of us now, who were then unborn, who live in liberty, remember those souls who gave it all, on the shores of Normandy

Fusilier 4206553 Arthur Charity, No6 Commando. KIA 6th June 1944 on D Day. Arthur is the only RWF listed fatality for D-Day.

Arthur enlisted into the Royal Welch Fusiliers on the 9th October 1940. After volunteering for the Commandos, he served with No.4 Troop of No.6 Commando from October 1942 and later with the Medical Section of HQ Troop of No.6 Commando from at least 30th August 1943. Arthur was 24 years old, married man to Joan, with one child when he embarked for France. He was originally buried 50 metres from Pegasus Bridge; a passing Pathe News team captured footage of his grave in July 1944. On the road leading to the bridge.

The RWF would embark across the Channel on June 25th to support the Normandy breakout campaign.

We’re delighted to share that our accreditation has been successfully renewed, with our certificate now in place – an important milestone that reflects the ongoing work and commitment behind the scenes.

Maintaining this standard is something we take great pride in. It highlights our continued dedication to caring for and developing our collections, and to sharing the regiment’s story in ways that deepen understanding of its significance to Wales and beyond.

Thank you to our fantastic staff team for their professionalism and hard work, and to our volunteers whose support and enthusiasm play such a vital role every day.

We’re also very grateful to our mentor and all our trustees for their guidance and encouragement throughout the process.

A shared achievement, and one that motivates us as we continue to build, improve and connect more people with our history.

It's another
Today we're marking the wartime service of Leslie Reginald Henry Fulton, 6th Battalion RWF.

In August 1944, the battalion, who were fighting in the North West Europe Campaign received a number of drafts of men from other units, in order to replace those men killed or wounded, including Leslie, who originally served with the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment.

By October 1944, Leslie found himself fighting near the village of Hintham, North of S’Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands where he performed the following outstanding duty which gained him the Military Medal- presented by Montgomery himself:

During the night attack by 6 RWF on Hintham, S’Hertogenbosch, Holland on 23/24 Oct 44, Fusilier Fulton was manning a PIAT. Fierce hand-to-hand fighting broke out with strong German forces who were trying to break out through A Company’s position. During this fighting an enemy infantry gun opened fire on the house occupied by Company HQ and secured two direct hits at almost point-blank range. This very dangerous situation was restored by Fusilier Fulton who, with great courage, left his trench under heavy fire and with his PIAT dispersed the gun crew single handed, killing and wounding several of them. This display of initiative and daring in a highly dangerous situation undoubtedly contributed greatly to the success of the defence. Throughout the whole of a night and morning of fierce hand-to-hand fighting Fusilier Fulton displayed the highest qualities of bravery and devotion to duty and by his example inspired his comrades to resist the enemy’s most strenuous efforts to overwhelm A Company and so break out’.
