For Deborah, fostering is something that has changed her life, and the lives of her children.

“You realise you are part of something bigger and that you’re making a difference. I am happier as a person because I feel fulfilled. My kids are grown up now and when they look back on it, they say it was a great period of their childhood and they benefited from it. All the children I’ve ever looked after, I’m still in touch with.”

Adele and Colin have cared for their foster child since 2021. Here, Adele explains how fostering is about the ordinary moments that have an extraordinary impact.

“With both of us working full time, we initially did not know if we could foster. However, with the support from our employers, Action for Children Fostering, and our family, this has been a lot easier than anticipated. Our foster child came into our home in July 2021. She was a very adorable, loving, chatty seven-year-old who did not take a breath. From that moment we fell in love with her and our family and friends very soon became hers. She lived with us a couple of months when I added a picture of her to our hall table along with pictures of my son and his girlfriend. She was absolutely delighted and kept going back to look at it. As months went by, we added more pictures of her in other rooms. She said that as soon as her picture went up, she felt she was a real part of the family and knew we cared. She says she feels so loved, protected and provided for, and for us, we feel so blessed.”

Jacqui fosters with her husband David. Here she explains what fostering is to them.

“Our experience in fostering has been rewarding but also very challenging.
"Fostering is going on a journey. For us, we watched a shy 10-year-old go through school, make new friends, and attend their first formal. We supported them as they went on to Tech, passed their driving test, and started their first job before ultimately moving into their own place as a young adult. It is so rewarding knowing we have been there to help and support them all the way. For this child to still ring us for help with everyday issues, knowing they are still part of our family. It is such a lovely feeling.”
“We have had challenges, such as when a placement broke down. We felt we failed the child even though we knew there was nothing else we could have done. But on the positive side, even though we are no longer this young person’s foster carers, they still ring us when they need help. That they know we are still there for them is also rewarding.”
“Fostering isn't easy, but you are not alone. There are plenty of support groups, training on how to manage every issue that will arise, and most importantly to us, Action for Children Fostering is only a phone call away, 24/7. It makes our jobs much easier to know that just like we are there for the children, Action for Children Fostering is there for us.”

For Kerry, fostering is many things.

"Fostering to me is coming full circle, from what my own childhood experiences were, to now using that knowledge base to help young people transition through their own challenges. It is giving young people the time and space for their nervous systems to feel a calmness. It is opening my home to share fun times and patience, creating lasting memories that make a childhood as stress-free as possible.”
