Buxton volunteers who first joined forces to clean up The Slopes in 2016 are celebrating their 10th anniversary.
Many members of Buxton Town Team's original Slopes squad are still involved in weekly clean-up sessions to keep the green town centre landmark looking its best.
“When we started everything was incredibly scruffy. We initially focused on scraping the moss off all the north-facing retaining walls and then down Terrace Road,” says Steve Bradshaw. “After that, we removed branches which were partially blocking footpaths and starting to focus on the paths themselves, edging and weeding.”
The group meets for two hours on alternate Thursday and Saturday mornings. There’s always plenty to do, says organiser Jim Lowe: “The aim is to keep The Slopes looking as tidy, presentable and cared-for as possible. It’s a unique place and it’s central to the look and feel of the town.”
Regular tasks include gardening, edging grass areas, pruning, cleaning and sweeping steps and pathways, cleaning litter bins and litter picking as well as bulb planting and painting the weather station railings.
Grass cutting and major tree maintenance is carried out by High Peak Borough Council, which also collects the team’s cuttings and weeds.
“We get a lot of positive feedback for passers-by,” says Jim. “Members of the public are very supportive and visitors often say they wish they had a similar set-up in their town.”
The team has around 10 active members, with a core of six or seven who turn up every week. They include original members Jim and Steve, Andy Regan, Phil Sutton and Linda Barker.
Coffee breaks, courtesy of the Pump Room, add a social aspect to the sessions. “We have become good friends over the years,” says Jim. “Although as we’ve got older, we spend more and more time talking about our ailments!”

TWO more new bridges have been installed over the River Wye in Ashwood Park as part of a Buxton Town Team project to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists.
The arrival of the replacement bridges, along with a third installed during the summer, is a landmark moment in a 10-year campaign by the community group.
"It is very satisfying to finally see the bridges go in," says Ashwood Park project leader Richard Lower. "It’s been a long process in getting everybody on board, finding the funding and obtaining the necessary licences and permits."
Partners include High Peak Borough Council and the Environment Agency. The council committed some cash, while the Town Team secured a vital £110,000 grant from Tarmac’s Landfill Communities Fund.
“At Tarmac, we are proud to support community projects that make a real difference to local people,” says a spokesperson. “The Ashwood Park bridge improvements will restore important links through the park, improve accessibility and help ensure this much-loved community asset can be enjoyed by future generations.”
The bridge closest to the town centre is now much wider so that it can be used by cyclists – the route through the park is part of the Town Team’s safer walk and ride network.
Meanwhile, work on the approaches to the third bridge, reopening a route closed for at least 20 years, continues.
The Town Team is working on other improvements to the park, in partnership with the council: “There will be more seating and planting in the area where the old bandstand was,” says Richard. “We are also looking at putting in a walking and exercise route. For people who are in recovery, it is one of the few flat areas in Buxton.”
Volunteers also recently cleared the footpath linking Granby Road in Fairfield with Morrisons: “Overgrown bushes and brambles were making it difficult to negotiate the path and meant the handrails could not be used.
“We cut the overhanging bushes, pulled out nettles, cut back the undergrowth, cleared litter and brushed the walkway. We got a lot of ‘thank yous’ from people using the path.”
