What a fantastic evening at our Winter Painting Challenge exhibition šŸŽØ

The standard of work on display was truly inspiring, and it was wonderful to see so many people come together to celebrate creativity. A huge congratulations to everyone who took part—your talent, effort, and enthusiasm made the exhibition so special.

We also celebrate our winning entries, which were beautifully deserving and clearly resonated with everyone who viewed them šŸ‘

A special thank you to Bury Photographic Society for supplying the images that inspired this year’s challenge. Collaborating with them for a second year has been invaluable, and we truly appreciate their continued support.

Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, and helped make the event such a success—we’re already looking forward to next year!

Last week at Bury Art Society our creative challenge was to produce artwork inspired by the zodiac or Chinese New Year symbols.

Perfect timing, as today marks Chinese New Year — Happy Lunar New Year to everyone celebrating! We’re welcoming the Year of the Fire Horse, a symbol of energy, passion, and freedom. It’s been wonderful to see how differently everyone interpreted the theme, from bold colours to symbolic animals and personal meanings. šŸŽšŸ”„

Last week’s programme, suggested by Anna Fryer and Zelakah Murphy, was completed by members of the Bury Art Society.

Still life drawing was the art of depicting inanimate objects—such as fruit, vegetables, or household items—arranged specifically for artistic study. The aim was to capture each object’s shape, texture, and the way light and shadow interacted across its surface. This required careful observation, thoughtful composition, and close attention to detail.

The twist for the week was simple but challenging: members were asked to depict the same still life subject in two different styles. How those styles were interpreted was entirely up to the individual and the more conscientious members did manage to complete two finished still life artworks.

The results demonstrated a wide range of creative approaches and personal interpretations.

James Rizzi was an American pop artist known for his instantly recognisable ā€œ3Dā€ style and vibrant, childlike energy. His works feature brightly coloured cityscapes filled with smiling buildings, whimsical characters, and playful patterns, all outlined in bold black lines. Rizzi often transformed everyday urban life into joyful, cartoon-like scenes bursting with movement and optimism. By layering cut-out shapes to create a three-dimensional effect, he gave his prints and paintings a lively, tactile quality that became his signature.

A couple of weeks ago invited members to create an artwork in the style of James Rizzi we had a riot with colour and patterns, it was great fun šŸŽØ

Last week, celebrated the season with a Pumpkin Challenge, inspired by 's visit to and the colourful displays at their ā€˜Pumpkin Patch’. Members captured pumpkins, squashes, marrows, and courgettes in every shape and shade — from bright oranges to soft creams and greens. Some even included the plants’ bold leaves, yellow flowers, and curling tendrils.

It was a marvellous, seasonal project that brought a real sense of harvest and autumn. šŸŽƒšŸ‚šŸšŸƒ

Last Monday, member Bruce and friend Vicky posed in full Tudor costume for what turned out to be a truly memorable session. The pair looked magnificent, bringing the Tudor period vividly to life with rich fabrics, details and a touch of drama.

We rose to the challenge, tackling not just a double portrait but also the layered details of historical dress! It was a wonderful opportunity to test our observation and technique while capturing something straight out of history.

As usual, we had two poses, split into four 20-minute sessions. Artists were able to move around between breaks, finding fresh angles and perspectives on the scene. The atmosphere buzzed with concentration and excitement – a perfect mix of creativity, history, and fun. Thank you to everyone who made this session possible, including Phil Raynes for setting up/ lighting etc.
