Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary Located in Lancashire, UK, Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary gives animals the second chance they deserve. So where did it all begin? This was all we could afford.

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary is one of the largest of its kind in the North West of England. It now boasts a 55 acre site in Edenfield near Ramsbottom, Lancashire and is uniquely positioned to cover a wide geographical area stretching across Lancashire to the Pennines and down in to Greater Manchester. Bleakholt is under constant development so as to be able to provide the very best possible care for over 450 animals currently with us. As with many such charities it gradually evolved. It was started by a very kind lady, Olive Lomas, who saved a lucky donkey named Maudie from slaughter. Her hard work and commitment continued thereby saving many horses. In 1957, the project moved on to Bleakholt Farm in the Pennine foothills above Ramsbottom. In the 60’s and 70’s our cats and dogs were housed in leaky wooden buildings. Our horses had old railway carriages for shelter. The site and work of the Sanctuary has steadily expanded and improved since then. Additions included a block of heated catteries and heated kennels. We now have purpose built stables and 1999 saw the opening of a cat and kitten building. We now have a dog hospital, where we are able to provide minor treatments and an appropriate environment for those of our dogs who are under the weather. Our Waddington kennel block was re-built in 2005, and 2006 saw the re-building of another block named Keller block. Both of these blocks have all the latest “mod cons” including underfloor heating and sliding hatches. Improvements are needed all the time. We have completed a much needed new toilet block in 2007 and an extra cat building was completed in 2008 allowing all our felines to be housed in one area. In the future we hope to be able to build a new dog kennel block to include new facilities such as a home environment simulation room to aid in training exercises. In 1969 Bleakholt became a registered charity. Our first president was Margaret, Duchess of Argyll. Our latest president, appointed in 2003, is Ted Robbins who you will know from TV (including “Phoenix Nights”) and radio. Currently he has a programme on Radio Lancashire. He has been a visitor to Bleakholt with his family on a number of occasions in the past so we were pleased he accepted our invitation to be our president. He regularly promotes the good work of the Sanctuary, for which we are very grateful, as well as joining us on Open Days when his busy schedule allows. Thanks Ted! In January 2006, acting upon the advice of the Charities Commission, Bleakholt changed its status to a limited company. The overall planning and management of Bleakholt falls to our Board of Directors (Trustees) who hold monthly meetings. These Directors are members elected at our Annual General Meeting. The day to day tasks of running the Sanctuary and caring for our charges is carried out by our dedicated staff. They are backed up by our army of supporters and volunteers who provide their time and help in so many ways and without whom the Sanctuary could not continue. We are extremely grateful for all the hard work they do. It is very rewarding. Please help us in providing this worthwhile service. Bleakholt hopes this site will give you an insight in to the Sanctuary and its aims. We also hope it introduces you to a few new friends both of the two-legged and four-legged variety.

Local man has approximately 0.4 brain cells and they are all thinking about food (his name is Boblob)

Said local man has a magnificent face, a LOT to say for himself, and the business instincts of a man who would absolutely accept a bribe of snacks in exchange for immidate friendship status

Boblob is just over two and a half years old, and we’re amazed he’s still on the market. Have you SEEN him? Have you HEARD him? Because this boy will happily stand in his outside pen chatting away to anyone who’ll listen, looking like he’s got some extremely important gossip to share

He originally arrived with us as an injured stray after being taken to Pet Medics. Sadly, one of his toes had to be amputated, but this hasn’t stopped him from getting on with life and being his gloriously wonderful self

He was initially a little unsure of unfamiliar people and places, but with time, patience and a healthy amount of bribery (read: food), he learned to trust us

He’s affectionate, vocal and an absolute staff favourite. He’s got bags and bags of personality and is the sort of cat who makes you wonder how on earth anyone could walk past him without falling in love

Unfortunately, Boblob has already experienced the heartbreak of a rehoming not working out. He was adopted, but sadly had to return to us because he struggled with other cats in the neighbourhood and could sometimes become overstimulated in the home because of this. So let’s be clear, Boblob isn’t looking for a shared house, a busy family gathering or a neighbourhood cat social club, and he wants to be the only baby. No other pets. No children

Just a loving, adult only home where he can settle in at his own pace, enjoy affection on his terms and have access to the outdoors, as he’s used to.

You may wake up to a full debrief about the night before. You may be informed that breakfast is late. You may find yourself apologising to a cat for reasons you don’t fully understand. This is life with Boblob

We have some very exciting improvements happening at Bleakholt, and we’d like to say a HUGE thank you to &EBoys for their incredibly generous donation to help us renovate our goat pen!

B&E Boys have donated a whopping 10 tonnes of brick hardcore and 50 bags of cement to help us transform the area and enrichment for our wonderful goats

Our team is working hard on site to improve the space, including upgrading the drainage, resurfacing the ground and rebuilding the shelter. We’re also adding some new equipment for our residents goats to climb, play on and explore

Projects like this take time, materials and plenty of hard work, so support from local businesses makes such a difference to what we can achieve for the animals in our care

You can read more about their efforts here on their website: www.beboys.co.uk/social-responsibility

Thank you again to the &E Boys for helping us give our goats the environment they deserve! Your generosity is hugely appreciated by our team (and we’re sure our goats would say thank you too if they can speak, but they just moan instead for no reason) 💙

Because while Pascal may only require a little set of paws to get around, caring for approximately 400 animals at Bleakholt at once takes a lot of resources.

It’s food, hay, bedding, enrichment, lots of tennis balls, and please don’t even get us started on the veterinary care side of it. But, at the heart of it all, is plenty of people making sure everything happens every single day

Making sure they know they are safe, well cared for, and most importantly, loved

Nominating Bleakholt takes 60 seconds of your time and would make such an impact here

Meet Molly! She’s a gorgeous bay mule, almost 11 years old, with a face that could melt your heart and a very important job here at the sanctuary: being absolutely fabulous

Molly lives at Bleakholt under The Donkey Sanctuary’s Guardian Scheme, and she’s really blossomed since arriving with us. It’s been lovely to see her confidence grow over the years, and she particularly enjoys seeing people over the fence

Which is lucky, because we humans are absolute suckers for a cute face peering over a fence. We don’t stand a chance

By sponsoring Molly, you’ll help support the care we provide for our resident animals and become part of her Bleakholt story. It’s a lovely way to show some love to a sanctuary resident, whether you’re treating yourself or looking for a thoughtful gift for someone who adores animals (plus a sponsorship pack is much easier to wrap then a literal mule)

Have you ever wanted to live with a large, fluffy gentleman who looks like he should be reclining on a velvet chaise longue whilst someone feeds him grapes?

Excellent. We have just the man for you

Simba is 7 years old and with that magnificent mane of his (we suspect he’s known since kittenhood), he is currently searching for a foster home where he can recieve endless snuggles and love. Simba lost his previous home through no fault of his own, after his owner sadly found herself unable to afford his treatment

Now, Simba does have diabetes, which means he needs insulin injections twice a day. But here’s the thing, he is an absolute darling angel for these!

I’d even argue that most humans make more fuss about having a tiny splinter removed. Simba just gets on with it like the dignified gentleman he is

He also needs a blood test at Bury Vets for Pets every three weeks to monitor his fructosamine levels (so his diabetes can be managed properly)

Whilst we know medical care can sound a little daunting, Simba truly is a very good boy, and we’d be happy to talk you through what fostering him involves (plus costs of all of his treatments and visits etc will be covered by Bleakholt) Other than the medical bits, you’ll also have a meowing lint ball roaming around your house begging for your love

Just don’t expect him to help with the housework (he’s got paws not qualifications)

Simba would like to be the only pet in his new home, with cat savvy children aged five and over could be fine, and he’ll need to remain an indoor cat so his insulin can be given reliably

Best get fluffing those cushions for his majesty’s arrival ey

Percy’s heard there's £5,000 up for grabs, and whilst he tried to nominate himself, we have informed him that’s just simply not how this works. He’s now sulking in a corner as if he won’t benefit from receiving the award still?!

Anyways, there’s now 3 days left to nominate Bleakholt for The Movement of Good Awards, which takes literally 60 seconds to do. Not a bad do really

Who is this devastatingly handsome man you ask? This diva is Eddie

He’s a weirdo (even the staff called him out being odd on his write up) but we’ll get into all of that in just one momento

Eddie arrived at Bleakholt as a stray from the Rochdale area, and it took him a little while to settle in. But once he started showing us his personality, we realised the guy was a tad…elaborate. Vocal. Quirky. They all describe him very well actually

The weird one is an affectionate chap (provided the affection is entirely on his terms) When HE decides you’re worthy of his attention, he’ll rub his entire body against your legs like he’s trying to polish you into a mirror. It’s an honour, so doon’t ruin it by getting overconfident and assuming you can touch him whenever you fancy (Eddie’s got boundaries)

Described as “approaches dinner like a Tasmanian devil” who’s just discovered that someone has put his tea on the table and there’s a very real possibility it might disappear, he continues to make us shake our heads for a very different reason each and every day

We’re looking for an experienced, understanding home with older, cat savvy children who appreciate that Eddie may need a little time to settle in and feel safe before his true, loving personality shines through. He isn’t the sort of chap who’ll necessarily be your best mate five minutes after unpacking his suitcase, but give him time, patience and space, and you’ll hopefully get to see the lovely boy hiding underneath all that Eddieness

We also think a compatible feline friend could be a real benefit to him, and once he’s fully settled, he’ll need outdoor access, as that’s the lifestyle he’s used to

Oh and you will be in charge of dinner btw so try not to mess that up or you’ll be getting words from the weird guy xo

🥰 We have two beautiful Guinea Pig Families still looking for another chance to make a fresh start with someone to love.

Both families are girls who are bonded and get on so well together. It would be perfect if we could home each of them as a group of 4, but if not, in bonded pairs.

Cherry, Blossom, Rose and Velvet (top pic) are around 2 years old. Della, Jemima, Tina and Sugar (bottom pic) are around 1-2 years.

Both groups have been fine with handling but are a little nervous to begin with. Guinea pigs really do make great pets with the right set up and a little patience. 💙

🏡 Both groups will also need time to settle down in a new home and would suit someone experienced in keeping Guinea Pigs and with time to spend with them. They would be fine with adults and older children and all would love a quiet home - without cats or loud dogs!

They will need indoor homes, but will enjoy some time outdoors in the warmer weather.

Let’s get these girls into their forever homes, so if you would like to meet these gorgeous families, pop up during visiting times, or email: [email protected] 😘

We would like to introduce you to Logan who is looking for a forever foster home.
Logan is a big soft 12-year-old American Bulldog.

He is a lovely lad who is looking for a home with someone who will be around most of the time and will give him all the love and attention he deserves.

Logan does suffer with his back legs so isn’t looking to go for miles but he does enjoy his walks and loves going out and about.

He is fine passing other dogs but on some occasions Logan doesn’t realise his strength so if there is something he is curious about you will be going there with him!

Logan is in our viewing kennels.

If you feel you could provide a forever foster home for Logan then please apply online.
