They should still be with their mothers...💔

Summer should be the season when wildlife thrives. Instead, we're already seeing the heartbreaking reality of orphan season unfold.

Tiny fox cubs arriving alone after losing their mothers. Baby birds found starving beneath destroyed nests. Young hedgehogs collapsing from dehydration and hunger. Fragile badger cubs too small to survive without constant care.

Every animal that comes through our doors needs warmth, food, medication, rehabilitation and, most importantly, a second chance.

That's why we're launching our ambitious £10,000 Orphan Appeal.

Our running costs now exceed £3,000 every month, yet recurring donations currently cover just one third of that amount. As orphan season intensifies, our incubators will fill, supplies will disappear faster than ever, and our team will continue working day and night to care for every tiny life placed into our hands.

But we can't do it alone.

Right now, somewhere nearby, a tiny animal is lying alone, hungry, frightened, and waiting for help.

Together, we can change that.

Please support our £10,000 Orphan Appeal today and help us continue fighting for the wildlife that depends on us.

Back in April, this beautiful female barn owl was found grounded and struggling in a farmer's field. When she arrived into our care, she weighed just 282g - around two-thirds of what she should weigh, and in some cases barely half the weight of a larger healthy female barn owl.

Barn owls rely heavily on small mammals, particularly field voles, which can make up the majority of their diet. When vole numbers decline due to poor weather, habitat changes, or other environmental factors, barn owls can quickly find themselves in trouble. For a specialist hunter like this owl, even a short period of food scarcity can have devastating consequences.

Over the next six weeks, our team worked hard to help her regain weight, rebuild her strength, and restore the flight muscles she needed to survive in the wild. Slowly but surely, she transformed from an emaciated bird fighting to survive into the powerful hunter she was meant to be.

And then came the day we'd all been waiting for... her freedom day. ❤️

Watching a recovered patient spread their wings and return to the wild never gets old, and this release was no exception.

Every rescue, every feed, every veterinary assessment and every day of rehabilitation is only possible thanks to your support. If you'd like to help us continue giving wildlife like this barn owl a second chance, please consider making a donation today - kirkleesvalleywildlife.org/donate

We’d be as grumpy as this little song thrush if all our tasty live food had run out too😅.

Yes… once again we are in DESPERATE need of live food for our many, many, MANY young garden birds currently in care.

Since March 1st alone, we have admitted an incredible 468 young birds - and every single one of them needs feeding constantly throughout the day from dawn until dusk. That means thousands upon thousands of insects every week just to keep hungry beaks full and growing bodies healthy.

Right now, what we need most are:
🪱 Waxworms
🐛 Mealworms
🦗 Crickets

If you would like to help, the easiest way is by purchasing directly from our Amazon Wishlist and having supplies sent straight to the rescue👇

Every single tub genuinely makes a difference and helps us continue providing specialist care to these hungry little patients during one of our busiest baby bird seasons yet.

Thank you, as always, for helping us give these tiny patients the very best chance of returning to the wild💚

Fishing line is one of the cruellest hazards our wild waterbirds face 🥺🎣

This young cygnet was brought into our care after becoming entangled in discarded fishing line. The line had wrapped tightly around his leg, restricting movement and causing swelling and discomfort. Sadly, situations like this are becoming all too common during the warmer months as more people head outdoors to enjoy our waterways.

Thankfully, this little one was spotted quickly and safely brought to us before more serious damage was done. Our team carefully removed every strand of line and checked him over thoroughly to ensure there were no deeper injuries hidden beneath all that fluff.

The good news? He’s bright, feisty, and already doing really well 🦢💛

Discarded fishing tackle can have devastating consequences for wildlife, from painful injuries and amputations to starvation and drowning. If you fish, please always take old line and hooks home with you and dispose of them responsibly.

Stay tuned to see this little cygnet reunited with his family tomorrow 🥹✨

Not every rescue ends with a return to the wild… but that doesn’t make them any less important💔

This heron was reported grounded along a local canal after he was seen being mobbed by some corvids. When our rescuers arrived, the large bird had perched himself right on the end of a barge boat - instantly making the rescue more difficult, with the risk of the bird fleeing into the canal.

And lo and behold, that’s exactly what happened🙈

But, our rescuer was well prepared with an extendable pole and net and was able to swiftly and safely retrieve the heron from the water before bringing him back to the hospital for assessment.

Sadly, once safely in our care, it quickly became apparent why he had become grounded in the first place. The heron had suffered a severe compound fracture to his left wing that was beyond repair. Due to the extent of the injury, the kindest and most humane option was to end his suffering.

Whilst we don’t routinely share these kinds of outcomes, rescues like this are just as important as those where animals are successfully returned to the wild. Wildlife rescue is not only about rehabilitation — it’s also about preventing prolonged pain and suffering for our wild neighbours when recovery isn't possible.

Thank you to the kind lady who reported him and helped ensure he did not suffer any longer 💚

Two weeks can make all the difference 🥹🦔

Six hoglets, from two separate litters, arrived into care two weeks ago, just a few days old and all being found alone without mum. The first four had reportedly been without her for 12+ hours and, although still bright, were already becoming dehydrated. The other two sadly arrived under similar circumstances, also found abandoned and vulnerable.

When they first came in, they were tiny, and at that age, hoglets are incredibly fragile and completely dependent on mum for warmth, hydration and regular feeds around the clock.

Fast forward two weeks, and just look at them now🥹. Bigger, stronger and doing exactly what young hedgehogs should be doing… eating, sleeping and growing at an impressive rate!

Orphan season is now well underway, with more and more vulnerable youngsters arriving into care each day. Every feed, incubator and clean enclosure helps give animals like these the second chance they deserve 💚

In no way, shape or form has this 5-second video been sped up. This really is how quickly ducklings devour live mealworms! They absolutely LOVE them😅

24/05/2026

Can you name the noisy species enjoying their lunch? 🙈

This month alone, we've admitted 136 young orphaned or injured animals. From nests destroyed to cat attacks, our figures are only expected to increase. So, if you can, please consider setting up a recurring donation today. Just £5 a month can make a significant difference in helping to rear hundreds of young animals who deserve a second chance🙏🏼
