Community History; 8 Years of TSG HERTS

We’re proud to celebrate organisations like TSG Herts that strengthen and sustain our local LGBTQ+ community.

During LGBTQ+ History Month, we recognise the impact of community pioneers like Fiona Brook, who founded TSG Herts eight years ago, creating a lasting space of safety, belonging and peer support for trans and non-binary people, their families and friends across Hertfordshire.

TSG Herts’ work is recognised locally, including being listed as a support service by Hertfordshire County Council, reflecting the group’s trusted role within the wider community.

As the LGBT community continues to face barriers in healthcare, we remember our past—when le***ans bravely stepped in to support our gay brothers during the AIDs epidemic.

When the AIDs epidemic first broke in 1981, widespread hysteria ensued—with AIDs being labeled the "gay plague." Medical professionals, confused and biased, even refused to be in the same room as those with AIDs. Le****ns (and some straight women) went to the frontlines, donating blood and offering support to those in hospitals and suffering alone.

This bravery is why the "L" comes first in the acronym "LGBT." Our history is what makes us who we are. And it's a reminder that we can get through this.
