A home is the foundation for everyone’s lives. It is where they live their lives, raise their families, do whatever they do in their lives, develop their hopes and aspirations. It is where everyone would want to feel safe, healthy, secure and happy.

The culture of people living in homes should be the foundation of the social housing sector. However, Stop Social Housing Stigma (SSHS) is concerned that some language and terminology used in the sector may not support the principle that social housing is about people living in homes.

They want to:
a) consider language used in the sector and raise debate about it
b) promote a culture of home
c) understand preferred language amongst tenants
d) develop common currency about what language should be used
e) inform Government and others about the best terminology to use.

A paper setting out the language being considered and why is available to read herehttps://stopsocialhousingstigma.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Language-used-in-the-social-housing-sector.pdf

The maximum sum you can apply for is £5,000.

Sound like something that could kick start your next project? https://www.havebury.com/residents/get-involved/community-investment-grants/

Clements Primary Academy received £5,000 from our grant to improve their pond area.

This project was special because it started with the children themselves. The idea to improve the pond area was raised by the school councillors, and their input has clearly helped shape the finished space. It’s a great example of young people having a voice and being listened to.

Headteacher, Mrs Hogg, shared just how much the funding has meant to the school: “We are so grateful for the support, it’s already had a huge impact on our children and the wider school. The pond area is now a key part of school life. It’s being used as part of Forest School, giving children the chance to learn about the environment in a hands-on way. It’s also a calm, welcoming space where they can take time out, relax and enjoy being outdoors.”

Date for your diary

On Thursday 18 June we will be hosting our first combined drop-in and check-in at the Chalkstone Community Centre in Haverhill.

The aim is to address any issues raised by residents while on site, allowing us to work with the Neighbourhood and Estates team to identify and respond to concerns directly. Representatives from the council's recycling team will also be attending to answer any questions residents may have about the new bin changes.

Join us anytime between 3.30 and 5pm.

We hope to see you there!

10/06/2026

You only have five more days to apply to join our Resident Experience Committee. We'd love to hear from anyone interested in getting involved.

The Great Get Together is the UK’s annual celebration of everything that connects our communities, inspired by Jo Cox’s belief that we have more in common than that which divides us.

This year’s Great Get Together will take place on 19-21 June 2026 and will mark 10 years since Jo was killed.

This anniversary is not just about remembrance. It is a moment of choice.

On 19 June between 10am and 12pm, Our estate rangers will be taking part in The Great Get Together to litter pick and be on hand to answer any questions you have about your community.

Here is where they will be:

• Navigation Place, Stowmarket – main car park
• York Road, Moss Bank, Canterbury and Granchester – Haverhill

Have you registered yet?

🌱🌱For 2026, we’re shining a spotlight on sustainability. Our new Sustainable Green Space Award is all about celebrating outdoor spaces that champion sustainability, support wildlife and highlight what you can do to make a difference to your environment.

Whether it’s creating habitats for wildlife, creating your own compost, or growing your own food, this award is about recognising ideas that are practical, inspiring and easy for others to try at home. We know that not everyone has a large garden, which is why this award is open to both individual outdoor spaces (this includes gardens and balconies) and communal outdoor areas. One winner will be picked from individual spaces and one from communal areas and both will receive a £50 voucher. 🌱🌱

🌻🌻Alongside this, we’re also opening our tallest sunflower competition which has proven to be very popular with our younger residents (and parents!) in previous years.

Open to all under 16s living in our homes, this is a chance to get growing and see just how tall your sunflower can get over the summer. From 26 May, you can collect free sunflower seeds and a tape measure from our office, or we can post them out to you.

All you need to do is plant your seeds in your garden, care for your sunflower, and send us a photo of your final measurement by 11 August (we would love to see the young people involved in growing these sunflowers in the photo too!) 🌻🌻
