Family Action West Suffolk Neurodevelopmental Support Service

Family Action West Suffolk Neurodevelopmental Support Service Family Action is a charity committed to building stronger families and brighter lives.

West Suffolk ND Support Service provides support and advice for families in West Suffolk whose children are either pre or post diagnosis of Autism, ADHD, or have other neurodevelopmental differences. We provide innovative and effective services and support to many of the UKโ€˜s most vulnerable people, helping individuals and communities address the challenges they face through practical, emotional a

nd financial support. West Suffolk Neurodevelopment Support Service is a new service providing support and advice for families whose children are either pre or post diagnosis of Autism, ADHD or other neurological differences. We work closely with health professionals, education settings and the local authority to enhance what is available to families. The Service will offer information workshops, specialised courses for parents, and can provide parents with a Family Support Worker who will offer home visits and 1:1 support within the family home for a short period of time. Referrals come to the service from the Co-ordination Function โ€“ a single point of contact in Suffolk. For more information, please drop us a message with your contact details and someone from our team will get in touch.

October is a time of change, the nights are longer, the days are shorter, and the trees are changing in colour. Halloween is fast approaching and whilst many children will love Halloween, we also know many do not.
Halloween may bring unexpected challenges and changes, the unwritten social norms such as not speaking to strangers, or taking sweets from a stranger are overlooked, and for those of us who are neurodivergent, Halloween can be a sensory feast for some or a night of terror for others.
Here are a few tips to help you support your child this Halloween.

Some individuals may not like costumes and dressing up. For some Neurodivergent ind...

Some individuals may not like costumes and dressing up. For some Neurodivergent individuals they can cause sensory overload with all those scratchy materials which are noisy as you move. However if your child still wishes to be part of the festivities for Halloween why not try creating accessories for them as an alternative. That way, they can wear their preferred comfortable clothing and simply theme with accessories which they have created which is a great alternative. We have suggested some alternatives below:

These nail wraps are also great for children and young people who often skin, nail pick or chew, it can be fun and helpful to try nail wraps. Halloween themed wraps can be purchased from โ€˜Oh My Goshโ€™ Nails linked below. The founder of this company shared with us that they have many parents who make purchases to support their young people with nail picking or biting. http://bit.ly/4n5Tci3

As it is ADHD Awareness month we are sharing the following from ADHD Awareness Month

There is considerable strength in whispering back, โ€œI am the storm.โ€ This ADHD Awareness Month, weโ€™re sharing the stories of adults who found their strengths within their ADHD. Aluna did more than declare herself the storm instead of allowing it to overwhelm her: She and her partner are raising their six children, all who have ADHD, to withstand the storms of life. They have created a rhythm to their familyโ€™s life that sustains them.
โ€œBecause even in chaosโ€”love has a rhythm,โ€ she says. โ€œAnd we keep walkingโ€”together.โ€

As it is ADHD Awareness month we would like to share Helen's story, taken from ADHD Awareness Month

Helen began to rewrite her story after her ADHD diagnosis. This ADHD Awareness Month, weโ€™re sharing the stories of adults who discovered the truth about their ADHD and found that they could break their own limitations to achieve the lives they want to lead. For Helen, it has helped her write a better description of herself.

The aim is to share reliable information and resources to help individuals with ADHD thrive.
Weโ€™ve dedicated this monthโ€™s newsletter to exploring ADHD โ€” highlighting not only the unique strengths and talents it can bring, but also the challenges that may come with it. In keeping with the theme of raising awareness and encouraging people to share their stories, weโ€™re honoured to include a heartfelt personal account from a local young man. He was keen to share his journey of living with ADHD and what it means to him.
