We had 5 nominations for Anslow WI's Charity of the Year 2026/2027. Following the voting at our June meeting, the one chosen was CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). Member Ruth, who will be President of Burton-on-Trent Rotary Club from July 2026, chose CRY because she wants to do something for youth in the Burton area. She is planning a Saturday or Sunday screening session for 100 people between the ages of 14 and 35 and will go into schools, local football, hockey, cricket, rugby clubs and Burton Albion to invite young people to attend. We are extremely happy to be raising funds at Anslow WI to help with this funding and also very proud of Ruth.

The Anslow WI June meeting was a night of presentations.
A cheque for £1,303.48 was presented to Ann Peace and Patricia Ackroyd for the Burton And District Branch Of Cancer Research UK; our Charity of the Year for 2025/2026.
Gifts and thanks were given to Barbara Goodwin who stood down as President at our May Annual meeting after nine years service.
Penny Walton who resigned from the committee after a year’s extra service was thanked with a gift.
Our speaker was Kerry Watson from Footprints Family Charity who gave us a wonderful talk. Two of our members visited Kenya last year so we have a special interest in the amazing work they do. It was wonderful to see how one person's purposeful journey and determination had changed so many orphans' lives. A blackout competition was run by Kerry in aid of her charity with a prize of a handmade basket filled with handmade gifts from the staff in her charity building in Africa. The lucky winner was Liz.
Member Catherine asked for cake donations for a cake sale taking place in August for a local baby treatment fundraising.
The competition was aptly 'Africa' and the winners were 1st Helen, 2nd Jill and 3rd Marilyn.
51 ladies have paid up for our 80th Birthday Outing to take place at the Courtyard in July.
A poster was out for 'Wuthering Heights' and boards were out for a planned trip to Heath Farm and the refreshment & vote of thanks rotas.
Orders were being taken for the July Fish & Chip Supper; our 80th Birthday celebration when WIA Verity Conner will help us celebrate and cut the cake.
The Breakfast Club will take place on 26 June and the Deer Park walk & refreshments on 29 June. In July we will need to pay Deb for the January 2027 panto.

Burton Rotary Books4Home

Thank you for your brilliant response to Rotary’s new initiative to spark children’s love of books and reading in the National Year of Reading.

At Burton Rotary Club we have collected over 1,000 pre-loved books of good quality and suitability that have been donated to 4 Burton schools. Teachers approved the books and attached one of our stickers.

On the Impact Day at the school the children were able to choose their book and take it home to keep. Members of Rotary attended these events.

We don’t want it to end so please keep collecting books for 3 to 11 year olds and we’ll donate them to more schools on World Book Day in March 2027.

Those who have Rotary contacts, could you please give the books to them in January or February or let me know if you’d like to be a supporter of this worthwhile initiative.

Thanks once again.
Ruth James

At our April WI meeting Jeff Sim, Head of Nature Reserves & Species Recovery, Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, gave us an extremely interesting talk on the Wildlife & Nature Reserves of the Trust and also updated us on the ‘Beaver project’. Did you know that Staffordshire Wildlife Trust (SWT) is moving closer to bringing wild beavers back to the Trent Valley – with reintroductions which could transform the county’s waterways and help tackle flooding, drought and pollution. Following successful trials elsewhere, in 2025 the government confirmed that beavers can be released into the wild under licence. SWT is currently preparing information for a future full licence application, with plans for a carefully managed 10‑year project. Once approved, this could see an initial 50 beavers introduced in suitable areas. Beavers are often nicknamed “nature’s architects” because their dams, channels and feeding activity create rich wetlands full of life. But their engineering also helps people by: Reducing flood risk by slowing and storing water, Helping during droughts through natural water storage, Filtering water, improving quality Boosting local economies through eco‑tourism, Creating beautiful, tranquil places that support health and wellbeing.

We welcomed one visitor. Committee nominations were requested by 11 May and Charity of the Year 26/27 nominations by 1 June. Information was given for one nomination CRY - Cardiac Risk in the Young. One of our members has recently competed in the European Masters Athletic Championships in Torun, Poland. Some of our ladies have been taking part in the Women’s Bike Project. Names were being taken for the New Year 2027 Panto in Birmingham. Members are looking forward to SFWI ‘Here Comes Spring’ 21/4, Breakfast Club 24/4, Lichfield Cathedral Tour 27/4 and Adventure Golf 30/4. Our member who is taking part in ‘Race for Life’ thanked everyone for their donations. A date was given for the Ladies Bowls Taster session. We collected Books4Home. We sold our NFWI raffle tickets. Our monthly competition was a recycled item. Our annual postbox collection for St Giles (in lieu of baking cakes) raised £92 and we raised a further £47 for our Charity of the Year. We celebrated three April birthdays and our refreshments were once again delicious. Another very busy meeting.

A group of Anslow WI ladies visited the Tara International Kadampa Retreat Centre today for the lunchtime meditation and meal ‘Soup & Serenity’; followed by coffee in their World Peace Cafe. It was a lovely relaxing few hours and a good catch up. Hopefully we will do it again soon, it is such a beautiful, peaceful place.
