Burnham on Sea & Highbridge Sea Cadets

Burnham on Sea & Highbridge Sea Cadets Established in 1856 the Sea Cadets was created by communities wanting to give young people instruction on a naval theme.

Burnham-on-Sea & Highbridge Sea Cadets is part of the Marine Society and Sea Cadets, a national uniformed organisation dedicated to giving young people the best possible head start in life, using the themes and traditions of the modern Royal Navy. Whether at sea or on land, the Sea Cadets offers young people across the UK amazing opportunities for personal development - by learning new skills and

working in teams - we offer an environment where young people find new confidence and inspiration. Traditionally old seafarers provided training while local businessmen funded the unit building. Today, 14,000 young people based in 400 units in towns, cities, and ports across the UK are challenging themselves and developing new skills, like sailing, boating, and rock climbing - supported by 9,000 volunteers. Message us or email us to find out how you can get involved.

What a day we had yesterday!

Our sailing team had an early start as they traveled to WNBC to compete in the Somerset & Dorset District Sea Cadets Sailing Regatta.
After a thrilling few races AC Grace came runner up in the Open Zest category coming in very closely to the defending champion.
AC William and OC Thomas came in first place after fighting off some fierce competition in the Open Quest category.
Cdt1 Aidan came away with first place in the up to 4.5m windsurfing competition.

A massive Bravo Zulu to the whole team they were a massive credit to the unit and we wish them luck as they progress to the South West Area Sea Cadets Sailing Competition in July.

Finally a huge Thank you to the CFAVs who have given up their time to help train the team and then facilitate in the running of yesterdays District competition all of which wouldn’t have been able to run without them.

This month some of our cadets will be inaugural students on a new Royal Navy Cadet Forces-supported Level 2 Award in Sustainability. This is a key opportunity to underpin our commitment to being world-leaders in developing the for future generations.

With that in mind, take note of this feature over on gCaptain about some serious investment in decarbonising the supply route from Toulouse to Alabama maintained by Airbus.

To all Ship's Company,

As I prepare to relinquish command of TS Dulverton I want to extend my deepest gratitude to every one of you. Your unwavering professionalism, resilience and dedication have been the cornerstone of our success during my time at the helm. Whether training at weekends or parade nights or in hard-fought competition, your commitment has never wavered.

It has been the absolute privilege of my 23 years as a Cadet Forces Adult Volunteer to serve as your Commanding Officer. I hand the ship and crew over knowing you are in excellent hands with SLt (SCC) Corey Hayes RNR. I wish him and his new Command Team fair winds, following seas and continuing success in all your future endeavours.

I will continue to support the Unit less visibly in the coming months and spending more time on my District role whilst continuing to honour the commitments I've made whilst in command.

Thank you for your service and support. Stand fast and carry on.

Lt (SCC) Dom Gregory RNR

This Bank Holiday weekend (actually Thursday and Friday) three (or four) of our cadets (or former cadets) turned 18.

Its rare to have more than one or two cadets age out in one year. This year we've had nine. And four over the space of two days? Almost unheard of.

LC James turned 18 on Thursday 21st. He rather understandably spent his evening with family celebrating his 18th. He couldn't, however, stop himself coming into the Unit anyway to bid farewell to our Triplets: Stan and Tom (Fred had already left us to join the Royal Navy in January, passing out in late March). So technically, Fred, Stan and Tom all turned 18 today. Its all very confusing!

Fred has forged his own path and is presently learning his trade as a specialist Seaman. Stan and Tom are students still.

Stan is one of our next Marine Engineering Instructors. As a cadet he achieved that rare combination of holding Advanced Marine Engineering in both the Mechanical and Electrical branches.

Tom is a legend of the Tors. A veteran of three consecutive years' worth of entries, each at a different distance culminating this year with the coveted 55 miler: and, we hope, our next Lowland Leader specialising in Adventure Training delivery.

James, a Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award Award holder, is also a Paddle UK Paddlesports Instructor as well as Sea Cadets' Rowing Instructor.

Its been an absolute privilege having all four of you as cadets over the years of your membership. We're looking forward to investing in you further as adult volunteers. Thank you.

Its been an action-packed weekend. Seven of our cadets joined two more from our friends at Dudley Sea Cadets - TS Centaur in taking part in the Unit's first Basic Campcraft weekend in over 15 years! Cadets undertook a day-walk and overnight camp to test their ability to live safely (and tidily) under canvas. Thanks go to our neighbours at Mendip Activity Centre for hosting us.

We also had a representative cadet at the 2026 Ten Tors Challenge arranged by the British Army and supported by Merlin Cabs O and P from Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton. AC Tom is a veteran of the Ten Tors having been part of the South West Area Sea Cadets' team for the last three years and taking part in the 35M, 45M and this year the 55M challenge. Tom turns 18 in just a few weeks' time and already has his sights set on becoming a supporter/trainer for next year's event.

Anyone wondering where the CO was last week would have found him at the NEC in Birmingham supporting Royal Navy Cadet Forces launch the RNCF STEM Vision as well as the new Level 2 Award in Sustainability.

And we have plenty of ideas to bring back to the Unit to expand our STEM offer beyond the Junior Sea Cadet experience.

Have you got an idea how the Sea Cadets can fully embrace technology into the future training offer and properly reflect the modern Royal Navy? Speak to your Cadet Voice Rep with your ideas!
