BankTheFood is a free app created to link donors to their local food bank and to help combat hunger in the UK. BanktheFood is very simple to use.

The need for food banks in the UK is higher than ever before. Our charity is on a mission to make sure food banks get exactly what they need, when they need. Download the app from your app store here and follow the instructions to get started. Once you have followed your local food bank, the app will send you a helpful ‘ping’ with a reminder of your food banks’ needs when you are shopping in your

local supermarket. You can then choose exactly what you would like to donate and leave your donation in your food bank’s collection box at the end of your shopping trip. Your local food bank will then be alerted via the app of your (anonymous) donation making it easier for your food bank to track and locate items they really need. We are a new charity and have been working hard to register all food banks on the app but we are not there yet! If your local food bank is not yet registered, please get in touch with them and tell them all about it our app. Details on how they can register are on the app. The more food banks we have registered, the more certain we can be that they are getting exactly what they need, when they need.

And that’s before the doors open.
Food bank teams sort stock, check dates, organise shelves, pack parcels and keep their BanktheFood needs lists up to date so donors know what will be most useful.
A great deal of work happens before the first visitor arrives.
This one is for the people quietly making it all happen.

A food bank shop. With no food in it.
And exactly what is needed.
Food banks may also need shampoo, toothpaste, nappies, period products, toilet roll and laundry detergent.
Sometimes the most useful donation comes from the bathroom cupboard, not the kitchen cupboard.
Food bank is a short name for a much longer list.

They say youth is wasted on the young.
BanktheFood would disagree.
The idea behind BanktheFood began with young people working with Southend Foodbank who noticed that food banks could receive plenty of some items while running short of others.
So they asked a very good question: “Why isn’t there an app for that?”
That question helped inspire BanktheFood.
This International Youth Day, we’re celebrating the fresh thinking and practical ideas young people bring right now.

Your local food bank’s list may be a little more varied. Some urgently need pet food while others have plenty, so it is always worth checking before you donate.
Because pets are part of the family too. And every local list is different.

Across the UK, local teams are responding to different stock levels, different pressures and different needs. What is plentiful in one food bank may be urgently needed in another.

There is no “food bank type”.
Food poverty can affect people of any age, in any postcode and from any walk of life.
It may begin with fewer hours at work, a rent rise, illness or one unexpected cost too many.
