Refurbishment Week 1 Resumé
The first week of the Ward Freman swimming pool refurbishment has flown by.
Freman College staff, students and visitors still parking in the swimming pool car park will have seen the contractors vans, equipment and skip. Despite telling delivery drivers to avoid school run times there was a large delivery on Tuesday at 8.30am, so apologies if this added delay to your school run.
Read all the first weeks work in our blog.

We are looking forward to the Big Help Out on Sunday 7th June, there is so much to clean inside and out. Thank you to all the volunteers who have signed up to help and the coffee, tea and hot chocolate already donated. With a tray bake and some biscuits pledged could we cheekily ask if there is another baker happy to donate a cake to keep all 37 volunteers fuelled?

The journey to get this far started in November 2023 when it was announced the pool would close a month later.
From the beginning East Herts District Council Executive Member Sarah Hopewell believed that the community had the power to bring the pool back to life. EHDC were the first to support the charity pledging £200,000. We have already received a £130,000 UK SPF grant and last night the executive agreed to a further funding of £105,000 increasing their original pledge by £35,000. This funding (along with other grants and fundraising) means the essential repairs can take place to get the pool open. At the moment we can't afford new lockers or chairs in reception but fundraising will continue towards these. Meanwhile all eight trustees are raising a glass to every Councillor, Volunteer, Fundraiser and pool supporter who has helped us get this far.

An exciting first meeting of all the trustees at the pool tonight, with celebrations and planning the future.
Thank you to everyone who has helped the charity get this far and for all the offers of help for our first volunteer day on Sunday.

What a lovely surprise to receive a £490 donation via Crowdfunder from the Buntingford Badminton Club. We don't know how this money was raised but we are very grateful and it will be going towards the new water main connection.
You too can donate at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/ward-freman-water

We want everyone to enjoy going for a swim, but with more and more people heading to the water and tragic drowning incidents once again highlighting the potential risks, below is some key water safety advice to help keep safe around the water:

Know the Water Safety Code

🛑Stop and think; always swim in a safe place
🏊Swim in supervised, lifeguarded areas
🌊Enter the water slowly and carefully

Stay together 🤝
Stay within reach of others, and keep children in arms reach at all times

Float 🛟
If you fall in or become tired, float on your back, breathe, relax and call for help

🚨If you see someone in an emergency:

📞 Call 999 (If you're at the coast, ask for the Coastguard, if you’re inland ask for Fire and Rescue)
🗣 Tell the person in the water to float on their back, breathe, relax
🟡 Throw them something that floats

Steve from GRC Filtration got the short straw today and was actually inside the filter vessel shovelling the old filter medium out. What have you done today?
