Not all pregnant people are women.

Trans Day of Visibility is a time to celebrate trans and non-binary people. But it is also a time to raise awareness of the discrimination the community faces worldwide. 🌎

Today also offers allies an opportunity to learn how they can stand in solidarity. Trans and non-binary identities are not new or unique to any one demographic. We need to broaden our understanding of trans identities to help us recognise and unlearn a Eurocentric understanding of gender. We can only do this by listening directly to trans and non-binary voices, and learning about their history. 🏳️⚧️

There's loads of evidence of gender variance and non-binary identities existing globally, across diverse cultures, and for thousands of years. Some of the earliest accounts are of gala and galli, priests who were assigned male at birth, who crossed gender boundaries in their worship of a variety of goddesses. Additionally, a Roman Emperor called Elagabalus, who ruled from C.E 218 - 222, was male-born but adopted feminine dress, asked to be called 'she' and expressed a desire for ge***al removal surgery.

Visibility is powerful. Visibility helps people feel less alone and can create a community for people with shared lived experiences. 💫

⭐World Down Syndrome Day ⭐

World Down Syndrome Day was created to celebrate the lives of people with Down syndrome and to ensure they have the same freedoms and opportunities as everybody else. 💙

Down syndrome (or Trisomy 21) is a condition where a person has an extra chromosome.
Around 1 in every 800 babies will be born with Down syndrome. Most people have 23 pairs of chromosomes (46 total), but people with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome on the 21st pair, resulting in 47 in total. Chromosomes act like an instruction manual that defines how our bodies look and how they work!

Down syndrome UK have created an antenatal care pathway for people suspected or confirmed to be having a baby with Down syndrome. They also offer free monthly webinars to educate and support healthcare professionals on best practices to improve the maternity experience for parents.

If you want to learn more about Down Syndrome, the best people to learn from are people with Down syndrome. You can find lots of information and videos on: www.worlddownsyndromeday.org

Happy St. Patrick's Day! 🍀

It always feels like there's a little magic in the air when you're a midwife. Miracles and joy surround you! And you have all these 'gut feelings' and 'intuitions' - things that you can't quite explain but would bet a pot of gold on being true.

But did you know that your gut feeling is most likely subconscious pattern recognition? Your brain processes information based on learned experiences, whether or not you realise it! It is telling you what you already know. This is why it's so important that you listen to that little voice and you trust it!

This is also why I always trust the instincts of the people in my care. It's why I will always support your decisions during pregnancy, labour and beyond 💜

Send me a message to find out how I can support you as you navigate the magic that is parenthood ✨

16th-21st March is Neurodiversity Celebration Week! 💜

Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a worldwide initiative founded by Siene Castellon in 2018. It works to challenge the stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences and aims to transform how neurodivergent people are perceived. This includes looking at how people are supported by schools, universities and organisations, and providing them with the opportunity to recognise the many talents and skills that neurodivergent people have. Importantly, it is also about creating more inclusive and equitable cultures that celebrate our differences and empower everyone. 💥

During my second year of university, I had the pleasure of attending a voluntary placement with a specialist autism midwife in Hertfordshire. It was inspiring to see the accommodations made, the thought and care put into the service, and importantly, the difference it made to people's midwifery experience. This is the kind of care that everyone deserves - individualised and person-centred. 🖤

As an Independent Midwife (who happens to be AuDHD), developing support that tailors to your needs comes as second nature. I have the time to get to know you! I WANT to get to know you. I understand. 🌶️

Comment below and let me know what your neurodivergent superpower is 💪

Happy Mother's Day to those who celebrate 🌼

Today is a day to celebrate your mum (if you want!)
But today is also a day to celebrate yourself as a mum. Being a parent is the most amazing, magical and fulfilling thing I have ever done 💜
It is also the most triggering, stressful and tiring thing I have ever done!! 😵💫

In honour of all mothers, I would like us all to practice positive self-talk and think about what makes us great mothers. After all, we're all just trying our best 🌟

Comment below 3 things that make you a good mum! - here's mine:

🖤 I really try to nurture their interests and support them in anything they do.
🖤 I am a safe space - always. We talk about everything (at an age-appropriate level), with a focus on honesty.
🖤 I have worked hard to unlearn generational habits - a slow, long and occasionally painful process! But I can see the rewards every day in the relationships I have built with my children.

A special mention to all the wonderful mums who are no longer earthside 💕 you are loved, missed and thought about every day - especially today as the world echoes with your absence. Forever loved 💜

Have you ever heard of the BRAIN tool? 🧠

B - Benefits [What are the advantages of this option for my baby, and for me?]
R - Risks [What are the potential risks, complications or side effects of this option?]
A - Alternatives [What are the alternatives to what is being offered? What are their benefits/risks?]
I - Intuition [What is my gut telling me?]
N - Nothing [Does anything need to be done? Could we do... nothing?]

This tool is a great way to assess your options throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. But sometimes, even with all the information pointing towards you agreeing to what is being recommended, your intuition is telling you no.

⭐This is your reminder that 'no' is a complete sentence. You do not owe anyone an explanation for your decisions about your body and your baby. ⭐

I chose to be an Independent Midwife because I feel a deep calling to advocacy. With me, there will always be someone fighting your corner; ensuring you feel informed, supported and in control. Send me a message and see how I can help you feel empowered 🖤

February is LGBTQIA+ History Month - a time to remember and honour those who came before us, challenged discrimination and fought for freedoms. It’s also a reminder that the work isn’t finished.

Inclusive, person-centred maternity care is part of that ongoing work. Being treated with dignity, being respected and feeling safe are human rights that everyone is entitled to.

This month, and always, we remember those who paved the way, and we continue striving for truly inclusive care.

🩵 3 ways to reduce anxiety before a caesarean 🩵

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER 💪
Ask your midwife for reliable resources about caesarean birth. See if your local trust can facilitate a theatre visit.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY 🔑
Talk to your midwife and/or consultant about your preferences. If you aren't sure what the options are, your midwife can help with that.

SUPPORT YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM 🧘‍♀️
Try using hypnobirthing techniques throughout the procedure to keep you grounded. Familiar music, reassurance and good birth support can help with this too.

It's OK if you feel nervous or unsure. But taking steps to make sure you feel informed, heard and supported can make a real difference to how you experience caesarean birth.

Send me a message if you'd like support navigating your caesarean birth 🌻

This might be:
- birth preparation & preferences
- antenatal education
- postnatal support
- advocacy & emotional support

When we talk about caesarean birth, safety is always important, but what so many families remember most isn’t just the outcome… It’s how they felt at the time.

Feeling listened to, supported and involved in decision-making makes all the difference. When communication is clear, and you’re invited into conversation rather than told what will happen next, birth experiences tend to be more positive.

I believe the way we talk about choices matters just as much as the choices themselves. Consent isn’t a form you tick off, it’s an ongoing dialogue where your questions, hopes and concerns are held with care and clarity.

I sound like a broken record, I know - but continuity of care really does support confidence and trust during pregnancy, birth and postnatally. This is something I hold at the heart of my own work. Continuity allows space for deeper conversations, for questions to evolve and for feelings to be acknowledged without hurry.

Everyone’s story is different, and a caesarean can mean a wide range of emotions. What matters most is that you feel seen, heard and supported, not just during the surgery, but in the conversations before it and the reflections after it.

You deserve care that feels calm, respectful and centred on you.
