Himalayan Balsam is a beautiful plant. From early July into the autumn, it covers UK riverbanks and railway margins in a spectacular display of purple flowers, while providing a rich source of nectar for insects.

Growing rapidly to around two metres in height, Himalayan Balsam can outcompete native plants by blocking out light. When it dies back in winter, it leaves bare soil exposed to erosion. Its explosive seed pods make matters worse, scattering seeds over considerable distances and allowing the plant to populate new areas with remarkable efficiency. For these reasons, Himalayan Balsam is now recognised as an invasive species.

Sadly for the mill, Himalayan Balsam has colonised much of our grounds. The gardening team recognises that we are unlikely ever to prevent it from growing altogether, as seeds are continually being carried downstream along the Gowy. What we can do, however, is try to reduce its impact.
Last year, we held a ‘Balsam Bash’ on the mill pond island, where a team of plucky ladies took on the task of pulling the plants up by their roots before they had a chance to set seed. Uprooted plants were left to rot - of course, they can't be added to the compost heap!
In 2026, the ‘Balsam Bashing’ has continued, but this year we have also tried a different approach. In June, before the young plants had a chance to grow tall or flower, they were attacked with a scythe. The theory is that cutting the stems below the first node causes the whole plant to wither. Scything is certainly a much faster method of control, and initial impressions suggest that it has indeed reduced the number of mature plants in the mill grounds.
Controlling Himalayan Balsam has been, and will doubtless continue to be, a Sisyphean task. But if we can keep knocking it back, year after year, perhaps we can at least prevent it from completely taking over.

Always something going on in Bunbury 😍

Bunbury Village Day Scarecrow Festival is certainly starting to gather pace, and we are delighted to see a few Scarecrows and Wild Art displays popping up around the village. The latest of which can be found on College Lane (near the Dysart Inn)

We’re not quite sure what species these are… but they appear to be a rare sighting of the Cheshire Wildflower Jeans in full bloom 🌼👖

Or perhaps they’re just “boot-cut botanicals” and “denim daisies” enjoying the sunshine! ☀️

You can join in the fun by creating your own Scarecrow or Wild Art display which should of course relate to our theme – WILD BUNBURY, celebrating the wildlife, countryside and community of Cheshire.
