If someone owes you money or you've had a dispute over goods or services, you may be able to make a claim through the small claims process.👩‍⚖️

But what actually happens?👇🏼

1️⃣ Try to resolve the dispute first - Before starting court proceedings, it's generally sensible to contact the other party and try to resolve the issue. In some cases, formal correspondence or negotiation may help settle the matter without going to court.

2️⃣ Make your claim - If the dispute can't be resolved, you can start a claim. You'll need to set out what you're claiming, who you're claiming against and why you believe you're entitled to the money.

3️⃣ The other side responds - The defendant will have an opportunity to respond to your claim. They may admit the claim, dispute it, or fail to respond.

4️⃣ The court considers the case - If the claim is disputed, the court will provide directions about what happens next. This can include exchanging evidence and witness statements and, where appropriate, attending a hearing.

5️⃣ The decision - If the matter reaches a hearing, a judge will consider the evidence and arguments from both sides before making a decision.

Small Claims Court is designed to be more straightforward than other types of court proceedings, but that doesn't mean there aren't rules and deadlines to follow.
