🚨 LONDON ROAD BRIDGE – CLEARING THE FOLIAGE, BUT DUMPING IT IN THE RIVER?

These photos were taken at London Road Bridge, where foliage has clearly been cleared from around the bridge.

Great to see vegetation being removed… but why has the cut foliage been left/dumped directly into the river? 🤔

After everything Buckingham has experienced with flooding, surely the last thing we need is branches and vegetation sitting in the water and potentially restricting the flow, particularly around a bridge where debris can collect.

We have repeatedly raised concerns about the condition and capacity of our waterways and the importance of keeping them clear.

Clearing vegetation is one thing — removing it properly is another.

🚨 THIS MAP SHOULD CONCERN EVERYONE IN BUCKINGHAM 🚨

We’ve come across this sewage discharge map, and quite frankly, it makes for very uncomfortable viewing.

📍 The map shows an Anglian Water discharge point feeding into a tributary of the River Ouse.

According to the information shown:

🔴 Discharge recorded on 26 August 2026
⏰ Started at 5:27pm
⏰ Ended at 5:52pm
⏱️ Duration: 24 minutes

And the map clearly shows the downstream route of the discharge heading towards the River Ouse.

This is exactly why we continue to ask questions about the health, capacity and management of our waterways.

When we are already dealing with flooding, overgrown waterways, concerns about pollution and the ongoing risk to homes, businesses, wildlife and residents, seeing repeated discharge events into our watercourses is deeply concerning.

❓ How often is this happening?
❓ How much is being discharged?
❓ Where does it go downstream?
❓ What impact is this having on the River Ouse and our local environment?
❓ And most importantly — who is monitoring this and what action is being taken?

We believe residents deserve clear, transparent answers.

We will continue to monitor these maps and share what we find.

FA4B – Moving Flood Mitigation Forward

Flooding in Buckingham is not going to be solved by one organisation, one project or one action.

That is why Flood Action 4 Buckingham (FA4B) continues to work with the Environment Agency, Buckinghamshire Council, Buckingham Town Council and other partners to identify practical opportunities to reduce flood risk and improve the town’s resilience.
Over recent months, FA4B has taken three important pieces of work forward:

Initial Assessment – Flood Mitigation Options

FA4B has submitted a list of potential flood mitigation options and wider ideas to the Environment Agency for consideration as part of the Initial Assessment process.
The list brings together a range of possible measures that could contribute to reducing flood risk in and around Buckingham. It is intended to help ensure that opportunities are identified, assessed and not overlooked simply because they fall between organisational responsibilities.

Natural Flood Management

We have met with and written to the Environment Agency and the relevant councils regarding Natural Flood Management (NFM), highlighting the need to progress opportunities within the wider catchment.
NFM has the potential to slow, store and manage water before it reaches Buckingham. We are pressing for stalled opportunities to be revisited and for NFM to form part of a coordinated approach to reducing flood risk.

Multi-Agency Flood Meeting

At the most recent Multi-Agency Flood Meeting (MAFM), our Chairman read out a letter on behalf of FA4B setting out our position and the need for a more coordinated and forward-looking approach to flood risk in Buckingham.

These activities are connected.

We are not simply asking, “What can be done?” We are working to identify what could be done, who needs to take it forward, and what needs to happen next.

Flood risk needs action, coordination and long-term planning – and FA4B will continue to push for all three.

Flood Action 4 Buckingham (FA4B) was established in November 2024 by local residents and businesses who’ve experienced first-hand the devastating impact of flooding in our town.

A POSITIVE STEP FORWARD! 💚

After all the campaigning, meetings, conversations and raising awareness about the condition of our river and the impact it can have on flooding, it’s fantastic to finally see work underway in the park by Buckingham Town Council. 👏
Not quite complete but we are assured it will be finished by Monday 🤞

🚨 FLOOD ACTION BUCKINGHAM – WHAT’S IN OUR RIVER? 🚨

This is what we’re finding in the river…

🛒 A supermarket trolley.

Not exactly something you’d expect to see floating down the river — but there it was.

We removed it ourselves because leaving it in the river wasn’t an option.

Alongside the overgrown vegetation, fallen branches, rubbish and debris we continue to highlight, objects like this can become obstructions within the watercourse, particularly when water levels rise and debris starts to collect around them.

And this is exactly why we keep asking for our river to be properly managed, maintained and monitored.

We shouldn’t have to be pulling supermarket trolleys out of our river.

We shouldn’t have to keep documenting the problems to get attention.

And we certainly shouldn’t be accepting this as normal.

This is our river.
This is our town.
And we will continue to speak up for Buckingham.

Another stretch of our river. Another promise not kept.

These photos show yet another section of the river that remains heavily overgrown.

Buckinghamshire Council previously told us this area would be cleared, yet it still hasn’t happened.

This isn’t about making our town look tidier. Overgrown vegetation can restrict water flow, trap debris and contribute to flood risk. Residents who have experienced flooding know only too well why this matters.

We’re continuing to document these areas because promises need to be followed by action. Our community deserves better than repeated commitments that never seem to materialise.

We’ll keep highlighting the issues until we see real progress. Flood prevention can’t be left on a to-do list.

🎬 Community Screening – People’s Emergency Briefing

Flooding continues to affect communities across Buckingham and beyond, which is why conversations about resilience, emergency planning and how we respond to future challenges are so important.

On Friday 24th July at 8pm, Buckingham Film Place will be hosting a free community screening of People’s Emergency Briefing, followed by an open discussion.

This is an opportunity for residents and business owners to come together, learn more and share ideas about how we can better prepare and support our community in the years ahead.
