We only work 3 days so we may not reply to questions straight away. Working in a former mining community, the conjoined towns of Buckhaven and Methil (population 16,000) in need of revival, CLEAR stands for Community-Led Environmental Action for Regeneration. to improve the negl

ected local environment and 2. to re-engage local people and build civic pride in the process. CLEAR carries out extensive planting and growing (community orchards, woodland, growing spaces, bulbs and flowers) year-round, which includes two vibrant community gardens, as well as landscape and greenspace site improvements (parks, paths, heritage and community art) seeking small scale transformative impact. It relies mainly on local volunteers and works with schools, college and other local groups.

We’ve been working on creating lots of new jam varieties and stocking up on old favourites ahead of the stalls we’ll be at over the summer. We’ve also been making some sweet treats for other volunteers as a thank you for their hand work every day they’re with us.

We’ll be at this event tomorrow with a stall of our Buckhynd Braes products :)

The hamlet of Rosie to the east of East Wemyss (on the road to Buckhaven one mile away) was built for miners and their families employed at Bowman’s Rosie Colliery. No 1 pit was started in 1879, with shafts 180 metres deep and 10 metres apart and No 2 pit in 1881 - extending under the Firth of Forth. It was purchased by Wemyss Coal Company in 1905 and closed by the National Coal Board in December 1953. The Wemyss Tramway system carried workers to and from neighbouring settlements.

All that remains now is a large grassy hillock, presumably covering the bing, with wildflower and healthy birdlife, when not disturbed by farm operations – the old Rosie Tavern is converted to residential use. A spur of the Coastal Path to Summer Road passes nearby. The map is from 1893.

Healthcare students recently joined us in the Buckhaven Growing Space for a day of volunteering. The students did various garden tasks such as potting up plants ahead of our plant sale and weeding. This volunteering day was not only an educational day in terms of learning new skills, but it also showed the students the benefits of ‘green prescribing’. Green prescribing is a practice recommended by health practictioners to improve mental and physical wellbeing through outdoor activities.

Many thanks to Karen, who works at Lidl checkouts in Leven, for the generous donation of £20 for the purchase of compost for the community gardens.

Large quantities of compost are always needed. CLEAR makes as much of its own as possible - as this photo from Buckhaven Garden a decade shows - but needs to buy in substantial additional quantities.
