Over the last few weekends, medics from Devon Cave Rescue have been working alongside our colleagues from Dartmoor Rescue to complete two Pre‑Hospital Trauma Life Support courses, delivered by Kings Paramedical Services.

Ongoing professional development ensures we stay competent, and up‑to‑date with the skills needed to provide the highest standard of care in challenging underground environments.

Here are some photos from a recent team social trip to explore GB Cave in the Mendips. The team trains in various underground environments, which enables them to respond, adapt, improvise, and overcome when it matters.

Devon Cave Rescue were called out to assist a multiple agency response following the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb in Plymouth.

The device, uncovered at a building site, prompted a major multi-agency response involving emergency services, military bomb disposal, and rescue units. Hundreds of residents were evacuated as a safety cordon was established around the area and the team was called in to assist with the evaluation alongside colleagues from other organisations.

The incident demonstrates the strength of joint working between multiple agencies. A huge credit to everyone involved in bringing the situation to a safe resolution!

It’s been a busy weekend for the team. Several members supported the Peninsula Mountain and Cave Rescue Remote Rescue Medical Technician training weekend, delivering interactive workshops on Saturday morning followed by a multi casualty scenario on Dartmoor that afternoon. Our team then assisted with running the assessment day on Sunday.
Meanwhile, other members of the team hosted a cave experience trip for the Tavistock Round Table , a charitable social organisation for men in their 20s, 30s and early 40s. They have kindly made a generous donation to the team as a thank you.

🚨 Devon Cave Rescue Needs Your Help! 🚨

We’re currently looking for a new place to store our Team Land Rover and are reaching out to the local community for help.

Ideally, we’re looking for a location in or around *Buckfastleigh, Ashburton, Heathfield, or Newton Abbot*.

The space would need to:

* Allow us to keep the vehicle on a trickle charge to maintain the batteries
* Provide 24/7 access, so we can respond quickly to cave rescue incidents when needed.

If you’re a local business, landowner, or know of a suitable space that might work, we would love to hear from you.

Please share this post to help spread the word. If you can help or have any suggestions then please comment below or contact us directly via email at [email protected].

Your support helps us continue responding to underground rescue incidents across Devon. Thank you! 🙏

We hope that you have had a great weekend so far. Meanwhile, in the deepest darkest depths of the South West, members of our team have been participating in monthly mine training, led by our Abandoned Mines Officer, Rick. This involved rigging a rope system for us to then safely descend approximately 100 foot to a lower level. The team then explored the various types of hazards mine exploration can present as well as discussions on casualty treatment and extrication from such an unstable structure.

🚨🚨 Call out 🚨🚨

Yesterday the team were called to Exmouth to assist with the evacuation of properties due to an unexploded World War 2 Bomb. Devon Cave Rescue Organisation attended, alongside our Search and Rescue colleagues from across Devon, all emergency services and Devon 4x4. This was a fantastic example of multi-agency working.
Thank you to Devon County Council, The Exmouth RNLI team, and the Rapid Relief Team for helping to facilitate this.

This month's training was focussed around the importance of a thorough primary survey when assessing a casualty. In the scenario, the team were tasked to locate a caver who had reportedly fallen and was unconscious with a fractured leg. The team worked together to assess the casualty, splint and immobilise, and then extricate them. Training using a structured approach and concise communication is a fundamental part of training in the underground environment.
