Dementia Action Week took place this month and we’re proud to be supporting people living with early stage dementia through our 3 Cognitive Stimulation Therapy Groups in Bovey Tracey and Ivybridge.

CST is an evidence-based group programme that helps people living with mild to moderate dementia stay mentally stimulated, socially connected and supported. Each session is full of conversation, laughter and great group activities.

In the UK, someone develops dementia every 3 minutes and 1 in 3 people living with dementia don't yet have a diagnosis. Early support can make a real difference. If you or someone you care about has concerns about their memory, please don't wait, start by speaking to your GP.

We’re incredibly grateful for the generous donation from Buckfastleigh WI we received today. This support will help us reach our fundraising goal to purchase a custom ramp for our Memory Café on the steam train at South Devon Railway, making it easier for everyone to come and go safely, comfortably, and with dignity.

Dementia, combined with other age-related challenges, can affect balance, coordination, and confidence, so a ramp will make a huge difference in helping people stay engaged with a community that supports their wellbeing and resilience.

Thank you again to Buckfastleigh WI!

This week it’s Dementia Action Week which is a campaign led by the Alzheimer’s Society which aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma and encourage action, such as seeking early diagnosis and supporting those affected.

It is estimated that over 14,000 people in Devon have dementia and we are proud to be one of over 50 Memory Cafes in Devon, providing community-based support and social activities where people living with dementia and their carers can come together with others in a similar situation on a regular basis, to share, learn, relax and have fun.

Yesterday 40 people affected by dementia came together at our memory café on board a moving steam train at the Buckfastleigh Memory Café to enjoy the journey and the uplifting company of others. This community of fellow travellers is made possible through grants and donations and we are extremely grateful to McCarthy Stone and the King Charles III Charitable Fund for keeping us steaming ahead for another year.

Please come and join the Buckfastleigh Memory Cafe on Tuesday 19th May at 3.15pm for our usual special trip as well as an afternoon of reminiscence. If the sights, sounds and smells of a journey on a steam train aren't enough to spark some memories, we also have Kate Green from Newton Abbot Museum with some interesting objects joining us.

Our unique memory cafe meets every month at the South Devon Railway, Buckfastleigh and we offer a warm welcome to anyone affected by dementia or living with memory problems.

A washboard, jaw harp, didgeridoo, kazoo and a bugle featured in this month's CST session which was themed around sound. It was fascinating discovering different instruments and how they sound and exploring how different music can affect the way we feel.

CST is a structured group programme for people with mild to moderate dementia that uses engaging weekly themes to exercise thinking, language and concentration skills. Beyond the cognitive benefits, it's about human connection - bringing people together through laughter, curiosity and shared experience.

Wishing everyone a very happy Easter and also a chance to show off the wet felted eggs we made yesterday at our last session before Easter. They're a talented bunch in Ivybridge!

This month's orientation session was a real highlight! The group had a wonderful time exploring the history of Newton Abbot with Kate Green, alongside some incredible objects from
Newton Abbot Museum

Handling real objects in Cognitive Stimulation Therapy is so much more than just an enjoyable activity - it opens the door to personal stories and shared memories, sparks meaningful discussion, and builds connections. And all the while, it's quietly strengthening word-finding, concentration, and confidence too.
