‘What on earth is this?’

CST is at its best when it's flexible and creative and so each session we explore a different theme. This helps create structure and familiarity while keeping things fun, meaningful and engaging. A good theme gives everyone a way in - whatever their ability, background or preferred way of joining in - and can lead to some brilliant moments.

This month we explored some mystery objects together and it was wonderful to see how an object can spark shared focus, problem-solving and creative thinking.

And in case you were wondering, the brass button stick (for that is what it is) was used by soldiers to protect their uniform while polishing their brass buttons…

The Ivybridge Cognitive Stimulation Therapy group had a brilliant time exploring faces today, with a focus on famous (and infamous) moustaches. From Charlie Chaplin to Salvador Dali we explored moustaches through history and discussed the pros and cons of facial hair.

CST sessions like this help stimulate memory, language, and social connection in a relaxed, playful way - a bit of silliness is great for the brain too!

If you are interested in finding out more about the wonderful benefits of CST for those with mild to moderate dementia or information about the groups we run in Ivybridge and Bovey Tracey please contact [email protected]

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) provides some fantastic benefits in terms of cognitive health for those with mild to moderate dementia, but another benefit that this group provides is social interaction and a sense of belonging.

The same 7 people meet every week and develop real connections and friendships. This month at our Ivybridge CST group we celebrated a 90th and a 75th birthday complete with laughter, cake, G&Ts (non-alcoholic of course) and a serenade on a Native American flute.

We are very excited to be part of a new series of workshops designed specifically for people who have recently received a dementia diagnosis. Thanks to generous support from The National Lottery Community Fund we’re piloting a programme of workshops that gives people the space to talk, reflect and discover what this new chapter means for them.

We believe real change happens when organisations work together and so we are delighted to be partnering with The Young Ones CIC, Rachel Clinkett, Chrissy Eldred and The Dementia Education Team (Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust).

Receiving a diagnosis of dementia can feel overwhelming so together we're bringing lived experience, compassion and practical expertise to provide a safe and support space for people to explore how this new diagnosis is affecting them and connect with others in a similar situation.

If you know someone who may benefit from the workshops, please do encourage them to find out more information by contacting [email protected] or [email protected]

Dementia Action Week took place this month and we’re proud to be supporting people living with early stage dementia through our 3 Cognitive Stimulation Therapy Groups in Bovey Tracey and Ivybridge.

CST is an evidence-based group programme that helps people living with mild to moderate dementia stay mentally stimulated, socially connected and supported. Each session is full of conversation, laughter and great group activities.

In the UK, someone develops dementia every 3 minutes and 1 in 3 people living with dementia don't yet have a diagnosis. Early support can make a real difference. If you or someone you care about has concerns about their memory, please don't wait, start by speaking to your GP.
