Based in South Devon we exist to inspire & support older people with dementia & memory problems

Please join us if you are living with dementia or memory problems on Tuesday Oct 20th at 3.30pm at the South Devon Railway for an autumn journey to Totnes and back with the Buckfastleigh Memory Cafe.

Our local Mayor, Paul Georghiades Buckfastleigh Town Hall and Institute will be there too as we will be celebrating the first use of a new ramp designed to make the carriage that bit more accessible.

As we enter the Buckfastleigh Memory Cafe's 4th year I wanted to share some pictures that capture some of the magic of last week. Lots of thank yous for everyone who made it possible: our funders McCarthy & Stone Foundation, Paul the Mayor of Buckfastleigh Buckfastleigh Town Hall and Institute, Indulge: cakes by Karl, Chaz from Ara Recovery For All and all our regulars and Ilford Park Polish Care Home. Not forgetting the very special volunteer team and the South Devon Railway - we'd be nothing without you!

The Young Ones CIC is a wonderful organisation supporting people with an early diagnosis of dementia. Together with Devon Air Ambulance they are the beneficiaries of the Teignmouth Tangent Club (National Association of Tangent Clubs) autumn fashion show. So do come along and support both these amazing organisations.

PS In the new year Conversation Works and The Young Ones will both be working a lot closer together... watch this space!

It's the Buckfastleigh Memory Cafe's 3rd birthday on Tuesday 15th September - an auspicious month for trains as it's also the 200th anniversary of the modern railway.

Our very special memory cafe takes place on a moving steam train every month providing great company, refreshments and plenty of steam... If you are affected by dementia or other memory problems please come and join us and our special guests to celebrate this milestone.

The Buckfastleigh Memory Café leaves from the South Devon Railway at 3.30pm and travels to Totnes and back by 5pm in our very own carriage.

‘What on earth is this?’

CST is at its best when it's flexible and creative and so each session we explore a different theme. This helps create structure and familiarity while keeping things fun, meaningful and engaging. A good theme gives everyone a way in - whatever their ability, background or preferred way of joining in - and can lead to some brilliant moments.

This month we explored some mystery objects together and it was wonderful to see how an object can spark shared focus, problem-solving and creative thinking.

And in case you were wondering, the brass button stick (for that is what it is) was used by soldiers to protect their uniform while polishing their brass buttons…

Newly diagnosed with dementia or supporting someone who is?

Together with The Young Ones CIC we're running free workshops for people who've recently received a diagnosis, along with a family member or companion. These 3 sessions offer practical guidance, a chance to ask questions in a relaxed setting and connection with others going through the same experience.

The Ivybridge Cognitive Stimulation Therapy group had a brilliant time exploring faces today, with a focus on famous (and infamous) moustaches. From Charlie Chaplin to Salvador Dali we explored moustaches through history and discussed the pros and cons of facial hair.

CST sessions like this help stimulate memory, language, and social connection in a relaxed, playful way - a bit of silliness is great for the brain too!
