STORMZY

This beautiful Storm Petrel had become grounded onland after high winds at Ardmair, and needed the right care to get him back to his nocturnal marine life.

Not every wild patient needs to come here.

Some should come here immediately, some should be left alone, some need to be moved, some need an hour's respite and then an attempted release. Some need to be transported to other specialist carers, and sometimes we direct finders to vets who are singularly qualified in the UK to diagnose injuries, and illnesses. And sometimes a bit of joined up thinking makes a real difference.

Peter found STORMZY, and contacted Noel Hawkins who messaged vet Cal Major who was away for the day. So Cal messaged me, as did Noel, and then Peter's wife Sheila rang me. A plan was hatched, short term care agreed, a handover later to Cal, a full healthcheck, a tubefeed of intensive care formula, another rest and then....release!!!!

Our care circle is precious and sometines absolute magic happens.

The secret - a generous helping of COMMUNICATION and full portion of collaboration.

πŸŽ₯ James Appleton, thank you - this is beautiful

James and Jo of Plantman Westlea Plants have raised over Β£3000 for our patients this year by sowing, propagating, potting on, and growing a huge range of gorgeous plants for their home based stall at Lybster. It's absolutely incredible!

It has been a challenging year for them personally, and there's been very difficult weather to deal with but their dedication, hard work and fabulous reputation for strong, healthy, local plants has raised a huge amount of money to help us care for our patients.

We're allocating Β£1500 to our new Hoglet Nursery project to help us cope with the growing numbers of little prickly VIPs, ensuring that James and Jo's hard work helps for many years to come.

Please help us to thank these truly wonderful people, and their lovely customers, for everything they do to help us πŸ’š

One out, five in!

I mistakenly muttered the words "I think it might be quietening down in the Hogspital" a few days ago but....yesterday was another humdinger of a hoglet day!

From Ullapool, Tain, Wick, Grantown and Newtonmore it was as if multiple Highland towns were desperate to get a pin on the hoglet intake map!

We've asked a LOT of our volunteer transporters this year and oh boy have they stepped up. Literally HUNDREDS of wee wildlife patients have found the help, care and support they need here because of the kindness and generosity of people who go out of their way to make a trip that really counts.

We just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to each and every person that has stepped up and covered the miles to make a difference to a life in need. We are so grateful πŸ’š

πŸ†˜οΈ MOOSE APPEAL πŸ†˜οΈ

Sorry for posting a picture of the wrong "mousse" 🫎 but desperation has kicked in.

Hoglet number 24 of October is en route and every one of these little, poorly, skinny, sometimes crusty, dehydrated souls is absolutely desperate for good nutrition. This is as many hoglets in the last 12 days as we took in for the whole month of October, last year!

We've almost exhausted our stock of the high energy, super palatable, expensive mousse that we use in our weaning formula and our intensive care feeding protocol. We know it's really pricey but it literallly works wonders!

If you would consider gifting them something that will truly make a difference to their recovery....a tray of Recovery Mousse would be so appreciated. We don't mind where it's sent from but we've added a link to make things easier, and the hoglets are all currently residing at

BILLY

(and William, his mum Sally, plus grandad)

When a very young Barn Owl fell foul of rough weather on one of his early adventures he had the good fortune to land in a nearby field at Keiss, Caithness...on The Croft

Wildlife hero William was very concerned about how his beautiful new friend might get on but a few weeks later, well fed, flight tested if a little shy, he hitched a lift back home with Keith, ready to get back to the life he was born to enjoy.

BILLY is sporting a shiny new BTO leg ring thanks to our good friend Bob, and as you can see (eventually) he flew off stong and true, towards the old building we think he hatched in.

πŸŽ₯ thank you Sally for the fabulous footage

Hopefully by this time next week I'll be over the finish line of the Dramathon marathon.

It's been a real challenge to fit the training in and I don't mind admitting being pretty tired but with over Β£500 raised already for our patients, I'm determined to run it for the wee souls that depend on us for their care. LINK IN COMMENTS

A new microscope is the goal, so the closer we get to Β£1000 the more funds we'll have towards tbe purchase.

As you can see, even the hedgehogs fancy keeping me company for a few miles but they're a bit slow as running buddies so I'll leave them with the Hogspital team while I'm away.

Could you help with a donation? Every pound helps, and it all goes to the rescue, the patients, their care πŸ’š

SATURDAY SQUIRREL UPDATE

After introducing a whole range of nuts, seeds, fungi and greens, we've added brambles for a lovely treat.

There are enough for all four kits but like in most families...there's nothing quite like pinching your sibling's treat!

During this we are starting to get ready for RUBY, SNOOPY, BIRCH amd EDMUND's move to outdoor spaces.

They're doing so well, we are delighted with their progress πŸ’š

Why are we still taking in hoglets in October?

Well...Autumn litters of hoglets are very common. Some hedgehog mums have a Spring litter, and an Autumn one!

Late Summer matings result in Autumn births and what seemed like a good idea on a warm night in late August can be filled with regret in October as temperatures fall, ground frosts start, and thoughts of hibernation preparation take priority.

A hedgehog mum knows that she needs to gain some weight, store some fat, and prepare a safe spot to take her through the harsh Highland Winter so she has a tough choice to make at this time of year.

Add road deaths of mums who head out earlier and earlier for food forays in a time period when roads are busier with traffic, and wetter conditions giving rise to higher parasite numbers and you have a recipe for a potential hoglet disaster.

So we're asking you to be extra vigilant for little hoglets out alone, in the daytime especially. You should;

πŸ’š CONTAIN the hoglet
πŸ’š CALL your nearest wildlife or hedgehog rescue

⛔️ No food or water unless asked to provide these by a rescue

PIPPIN

Thank goodness that 12 year old Aoife was paying attention on her way home from school, in Ullapool, yesterday.

This little one had been spotted by others but they thought leaving him might be the right thing to do. Aoife's instincts told her that something needed to be done. It was mid afternoon, he was alone in a road, and he was very, very little.

Using her sleeves to protect her hands and provide him with a gentle journey she carried him home much to mum Mairead's surprise! Once we had a chat on the phone and a quick weigh in - he's only 120g - our fabulous HWR supervet friend Cal agreed to give him the once over and provide overnight support.

A lift to Dingwall by Jenny and then a rearranged morning by Lisa that freed her up for some transport magic, meant he arrived here warm, and ready to enjoy some HWR top hoglet care. He's skinny and much too light for his size but we're sorting that out now with huge thanks to Aoife, Cal, and his transporters πŸ’š

But why are there such little hoglets out and about in a progressively chilly October? Come back tomorrow to find out more, and what you can do to help πŸ₯°

ISLA

Some patients just take your breath away!

Thanks to Thomas this adult, female Peregrine falcon has been uplifted from a field in Grantown-on-Spey and recieved the initial care she needed before travelling here for rehabilitation. His dedication to her rescue was extraordinary.

We help many birds of prey each year and we are always bowled over by the intensity of these birds.

Requiring careful handling, prone to stress, with picky feeding habits in care....we love the challenge of helping them back to full health and their return to the wild.

Nursing an old, healed injury we are deighted to see significant improvement in the first 48 hours and are hopeful that ISLA will continue to recover well.
