Supporting migrating swallows in Romsley.
Swallow numbers are reducing in the UK due to changes in farming methods and housing development. They are a wonderful sight in Romsley and we are looking forward to their return from sub-Saharan Africa within the next few weeks to nest in our barns and outbuildings over the summer.
The Parish Council have purchased some ready-made swallow nests (cups) from the RSPB are looking to invite a few residents to put them up on their property. We are hoping that by increasing the number of available nests we can attract more swallows to join us in the village.
If you have a stable or outbuilding or garage with high eaves, could you help?
The cups need to be 2m off the ground secured to a beam or high eaves and a metre from any other nests.
If you have had swallows nesting in the past, that will help and there must be a clear path for them to swoop in and out at all times.
There will be no charge for the cups, and although we can advise about suitable locations, the owner will be responsible for putting them up and looking after them.
We will ask for progress reports every month during the summer and hopefully if we are successful, we can add more cups next year.
