Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer

Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer Sadly, Carol lost her battle with cancer, as did Sue when she was later diagnosed with the disease.

An award-winning, community-focused Breast Cancer charity raising money for cancer support through our Hugs in a Bags campaign and always supporting fighters and survivors across the West Midlands. Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer was established in 2000 by Veronica Kumeta and the late Sue Macmaster, after their friend Carol Knaggs was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Having raised money for Breast Canc

er before the idea was to control where the money went, rather than giving it to national charities, so we contacted the Queen Elizabeth Birmingham and started working exclusively with them. But their legacy lives on…

Despite losing two close friends, Veronica continued with the charity and recruited a group of local female volunteers in 2000, with the aim of raising both funds and awareness of the disease. Since 2000, Ladies Fight Breast Cancer has given over £1 million to the QE’s Cancer Unit, which has helped fund new medical equipment and create a ‘centre of excellence’. This equipment includes a Mobile Mammogram Trailer to allow up to ten women an hour to be x-rayed in their local area; an Ultra Sound Scanner for diagnosing breast disease; a Cooling Cap to reduce hair loss during treatment; and a Faxitron X-Ray Machine that enables microscopic clarity during biopsies. With a packed calendar of fundraising activities, all of the money stays within the West Midlands, helping Breast Cancer patients within a 70-mile radius of the hospital. This means if you donate money to us, you can see exactly where it’s going and how it’s being spent. And with one person every 10 minutes being diagnosed with the disease in the UK, it’s important to fund front-line services to ensure that patients are getting the best possible treatment. We have now launched a £1 Million Appeal to fund important ‘soft services’ at the QE Hospital that go beyond the means of the NHS. In 2015, when the Breast Cancer Unit moves to its new location at the QE, we want to fund a patients’ lounge, hair salon, beauty treatments and bra-fitting services. Have a look at how you can help us achieve that over on our Support Us pages and sign up to some of our Events to help raise money.

It was a real pleasure to welcome the amazing Emma Jones from Rhino Interiors to our 26th birthday celebratory coffee morning.

The incredible team at Rhino sponsored our two working office spaces within the LFBC Hub, helping us create bright, spacious and private areas for the LFBC team, our volunteers and our community to use for sessions, support and day to day charity work.

These spaces make such a difference to how we can support people affected by breast cancer, giving us room to connect, listen, plan and continue growing the impact of the Hub.

A huge LFBC thank you to Emma and the whole Rhino team for standing beside us and helping us create a space that truly supports our community.

Rhino Interiors are specialists in creating thoughtful, practical and beautifully designed workspaces, and their support has helped us bring that same level of care into the LFBC Hub. Their team understood how important it was for us to have spaces that felt bright, calm, private and welcoming, not only for the LFBC team and volunteers, but for the people in our community who come to us for support.

All the ladies who checked their breasts this week… hands up 🙋‍♀️

And all the ladies who just thought “oh I really need to do that”…

This is your reminder 💕

Life is busy. We forget. We put ourselves at the bottom of the list.

So here is your little LFBC nudge to take a few minutes for you.

Check in with yourself, remind your friends, send this to the group chat and let’s make breast checks part of normal conversation.

Regular self checks help you understand what is normal for you so you can spot changes early. Take a few moments each month to check your breasts and speak to your GP if you notice anything unusual.

A huge LFBC thank you to Councillor Josh Robinson Bromsgrove District Council for joining us at our 26th birthday coffee morning.

It was such a special morning, celebrating 26 years of Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer and the local impact that continues to grow through our community, our supporters and the LFBC Hub.

The Hub is at the heart of so much of what we do, creating a welcoming space for people affected by breast cancer to find friendship, support, understanding and a reminder that they are not alone.

We are so proud of the difference being made locally, and so grateful to everyone who continues to stand beside us.

Because at LFBC, we believe no one should face breast cancer alone.

For £150, you can help us create something truly meaningful, a safe, welcoming space where women affected by breast cancer can come together, connect, and feel supported.

Your sponsorship could fund a coffee morning or choir rehearsal, giving patients and members a chance to talk, share, sing, and simply be surrounded by others who understand what they’re going through.

These moments of togetherness are so much more than an activity, they offer comfort, confidence, and a sense of belonging during some of life’s most difficult times.

By sponsoring a session, you’re not just funding an event, you’re helping to build hope, friendship, and healing.
Thank you for helping us continue this vital support.

Feel It Friday is here to remind you to pause and check your body. Knowing what feels normal for you means you’re more likely to notice any changes early.

It’s quick, it’s simple, and it’s something everyone should prioritise.

Our lovely vibrant Lucy is sharing her breast cancer experience with us, a story that highlights the power of friendship, community, strength and transformation.

At LFBC we know that behind every diagnosis is a person, a family, a support system and a journey that can change everything. Lucy’s story is one of honesty, resilience and the importance of having people around you who lift you up through the hardest moments.
