A Final Farewell to Brother Nick Tonge

Today, more than 130 people gathered at Bluebell Cemetery and Crematorium to say a final farewell to our dear friend and Brother, Nick Tonge.

The remarkable attendance reflected the great affection in which Nick was held across every part of his life. His family and friends were joined by members of his golf club, the Rotary Club and many of his Brethren in Freemasonry.

Within Rose Croix, Nick had been a much-valued member of John the Baptist Chapter No. 1040 since his Perfection in March 2014, serving as its Most Wise Sovereign during 2024/25.

Nick’s service to the Order had also been recognised by the Supreme Council, which elected him to receive the 30° in February 2026. Sadly, ill health prevented him from attending the ceremony on 2 June. Arrangements were being made for him to receive the Degree on a later date when, sadly, we lost him.

The service included some wonderful and deeply personal tributes from Nick’s friends. His daughter, speaking on behalf of the family, showed remarkable composure and spoke beautifully and movingly about her father. Her words were warmly received by everyone present and left few unmoved.

It was a deeply emotional day, but also a fitting tribute to a man who meant so much to so many. We said farewell to a dear friend and Brother who will be greatly missed by us all.

Journey well, Brother Nick. We shall see you on the other side. 🙏

THE LEGACY BEGINS

The new West Kent Most Wise Sovereign Legacy Cards have arrived, and with them begins a wonderful new chapter in the continuing history of our District.

For generations, the story of each Chapter has been shaped by the Brethren who have accepted the responsibility of serving as Most Wise Sovereign. Every year of leadership is different: some are remembered for growth, some for memorable ceremonies, some for welcoming new members and others for strengthening the fellowship at the heart of Chapter life.

The Most Wise Sovereign Legacy Programme has been created to ensure that these individual years of service become part of the permanent record of the District of West Kent.

Every Most Wise Sovereign enthroned during the 2026/27 season, and in each season thereafter, will be allocated his own unique Legacy Number and presented with a specially produced commemorative card.

The card is not an award or simply a keepsake. It recognises a year of leadership devoted to the welfare and happiness of a Chapter: encouraging officers, supporting members, maintaining traditions and preparing the way for those who will follow.

The Programme cannot operate retrospectively. However, from its introduction on 1 September 2026, every new Most Wise Sovereign will take his own recorded place in the continuing story of our District.

Thoughtfully designed. Permanently recorded. Respectfully presented.

In Memoriam – Ill. Bro. Matthew Roy-Macaulay 30°

It is with great sadness that we record the passing of Ill. Bro. Matthew Roy-Macaulay 30°, a much-loved and respected member of Biggin Hill Chapter No. 936.

Matthew’s association with the Ancient and Accepted Rite extended far beyond West Kent. A native of Sierra Leone, he had first been Perfected into Orion Chapter No. 176 in the District of Sierra Leone and The Gambia, before later becoming a member of Biggin Hill Chapter. His membership therefore represented a very real and enduring link between the two Districts.

Matthew was Perfected into Orion Chapter on 23rd October 2001 and subsequently joined Biggin Hill Chapter on 25th January 2008, remaining a subscribing member for more than eighteen years. In April 2023, his longstanding association with Orion Chapter was recognised when he was made an Honorary Member.

Matthew was a man of deep Christian faith whose life was enriched by his great love of music. A gifted tenor, he sang with church and other choirs in both Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom. Those who knew him speak warmly of his kindness, wisdom, gentle nature and friendship, qualities which clearly touched many lives both within and beyond Freemasonry.

His passing was marked at the opening meeting of Biggin Hill Chapter’s 2026/27 season, when the Brethren observed a dignified In Memoriam in remembrance of a Brother who had been part of the Chapter for so many years.

Matthew will be greatly missed by the members of Biggin Hill Chapter, by his Brethren in Sierra Leone and The Gambia, and by the many family members and friends whose lives he touched over the years.

On behalf of the District of West Kent, we extend our sincere condolences to Matthew’s family and friends at this sad time.

Requiescat in Pace.

A Memorable Evening at Biggin Hill Chapter

Tonight’s visit to Biggin Hill Chapter No. 936 began on a solemn note, with an In Memoriam for the late Ill. Bro. Matthew Roy-Macaulay 31°. It was a dignified opportunity for the Brethren to remember and pay tribute to him.

The evening continued with an excellent Ceremony of Enthronement, conducted by the outgoing Most Wise Sovereign, E. & P. Bro. Robert Blair 18°, during which E. & P. Bro. Joseph was Enthroned as Most Wise Sovereign for the 2026/27 season.

The Address to the Sovereign was delivered by Ill. Bro. Martin Davies 30°, with the Address to the Princes delivered by Ill. Bro. Toks Taylor 31°.

The occasion was made even more memorable by the presence of two very special guests: Ill. Bro. Emile M. C. Carr 31°, District Grand Master for Sierra Leone and The Gambia, and Ill. Bro. Robert Macauley 32°, from the Valley of Washington, Orient of the District of Columbia, Southern Jurisdiction of the United States of America.

Their presence gave the evening a truly international dimension and provided a wonderful reminder of the friendship and fellowship that unite members of our Order across the world.

Warmest congratulations to Joseph, and well done to Robert and all the Brethren who contributed to such a marvellous evening. 👏

More photographs from the evening are now available in the Members’ Area.

Chapter life is under way again in West Kent.

Oakley Chapter No. 890 met at Bromley yesterday evening, and tonight Biggin Hill Chapter No. 936 gathers at Sidcup for its Enthronement meeting.

The Enthronement of a Most Wise Sovereign is more than a change of office. It begins a year of leadership, service and continuity, undertaken for the welfare and happiness of the Chapter.

Tonight will also see the first presentation under the West Kent Most Wise Sovereign Legacy Programme. Each newly enthroned Sovereign will receive a unique District Legacy Number, ensuring that his year of service becomes part of our continuing history.

We wish the Brethren of Biggin Hill a memorable meeting and their new Most Wise Sovereign a happy and successful year.

The New Season Begins at Oakley Chapter

The District’s 2026/27 season began this evening at Oakley Chapter No. 890, where it was lovely to see the Brethren again following the summer recess.

A few members were unfortunately unable to attend for a variety of reasons, but I hope to catch up with them when I next visit the Chapter.

During the meeting, I had the pleasure of presenting E. & P. Bro. Charles with his Supreme Council certificate. It was also particularly pleasing to see Ill. Bro. John declared Most Wise Sovereign for the ensuing year.

My warmest congratulations to John, with every good wish to him and the Chapter for a happy and successful year ahead.

The Chapter’s next meeting will be held on Tuesday 3rd November, when Ill. Bro. John will be Enthroned as Most Wise Sovereign, an evening not to be missed. 🗓️

Well done to all the Brethren involved in such an enjoyable start to the season. 👏
