Society of Bromley Youths

Society of Bromley Youths Founded on 29th May, 1773, the Society is responsible for the ringing of the bells at the Parish Church of Ss Peter & Paul in Bromley, Kent.

The Society comprises people of all ages who enjoy learning to ring church bells according to the English custom of 'change ringing'. We are always on the look out for new recruits.Once gained, bell ringing is a skill for life you’ll never forget and can open up a lifetime of experiences and enjoyment. Bromley bells are some of the finest in the country and very popular amongst those in the ringin

g community, and the Society is proud to have the tower as its headquarters. The teaching programme begins with learning to ring a bell with its rope and wheel by yourself, taught on a one-on-one basis. You then learn foundation skills such as ringing your bell in time with everyone else. Then the real fun starts as you learn how to ring changes and create that unique sound, using your skills in rhythm, co-ordination, and whatever extent of mathematics that you like. You can then go on to participate in special performances (quarter peals and peals). Ringing is a very social hobby. Lots of people to meet, different bell towers to visit, and ringers all know how to have a good time once the ringing is over.

Really proud of our three young ringers who represented the Lewisham District at today's Kent County youth striking competition, helping the team gain a creditable 3rd place and score of 86%. Well done to all of them!

BBC Radio 4 Bells on Sunday today comes from the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Bromley, Kent. Largely destroyed by bombing in 1941, the church was rebuilt in the 1950s. The new building incorporated the surviving medieval tower and much of the flint and fragments of the original stone building. There are eight bells cast by the Gillet and Johnston foundry of Croydon in 1950. The tenor bell weighs 16-and-a-half hundredweight and is tuned to the note of F. We hear them now ringing Double Norwich Court Bob Major.
