A journalist recently asked us a question that stuck with us: β€œWhy do the smallest babies need the biggest equipment?”

It’s a simple question, but the answer says a lot about the care premature babies need.

Around 60% of the children we support are premature babies, some born so early that their bodies aren’t yet able to regulate essential functions like breathing or temperature on their own.

That means they can’t simply be moved like other babies and children.

Instead, they travel inside a specialist mobile incubator, essentially a mini mobile intensive care unit. It keeps them warm, supports their breathing, and allows them to be closely monitored throughout the journey.

The incubator itself is incredibly heavy, weighing around 200 lbs, yet it’s protecting a tiny, fragile life that may weigh just a few pounds πŸ’œ

β˜€οΈβœˆοΈ We’re already in our busiest time of year.

During the summer months, more families are travelling, and this is when we see more children needing urgent support away from home. This includes babies born prematurely abroad and children who become seriously unwell and need help returning to the UK.

We’re here to help bring them home safely, so they can access NHS care as quickly as possible.

Every call we receive is a family going through a frightening and uncertain moment, and we want to be there for each and every one of them.

But we can’t do it alone.

πŸ’œ With your support, we can reach every child and family who needs us this summer: https://www.lias-wings.org.uk/donate

β€œWe are so lucky to see her growing and we cherish every moment.”
- Marianna, Sophia's mum πŸ₯ΉπŸ’œ

Can you believe this smiley little toddler was once that tiny baby in a sling, waiting for her first flight home to the UK? πŸ’œ

Sophia was born while her family were on holiday in Croatia, and we flew her home to receive neonatal care closer to home.

She is now 21 months old and absolutely thriving!

She loves going to local baby groups, making new friends, and spending time with her big sister, mum, and dad. Everything they hoped for πŸ’«

Thank you for helping make outcomes like this possible for families πŸ’œ

Meet Dylan πŸ’œ

Dylan is 8 years old and was seriously injured in a tragic accident while on holiday in Holland, when he was run over by a tractor on a beach.

He sustained a severe traumatic leg injury and needed ongoing specialist care.

Our charity transferred him home to the UK so he could continue his treatment and rehabilitation closer to his family.

Because of his injury and the close proximity to the UK, we transferred Dylan by road ambulance rather than air πŸš‘

Throughout this incredibly difficult time, we have worked closely with his family to ensure Dylan could access the care he needed as safely as possible, while helping to keep the family together during his treatment.

We’re so proud to have been part of Dylan's journey and will continue to support him and his family throughout his recovery πŸ’œ
