About Us

The team is made up of men and women from all over the Island. Team members are all volunteers and give up their time freely and without pay when an emergency arises. All Team members receive regular training in skills such as First Aid, Navigation, Ropework, Helicopter familiarisation. This is achieved via a combination of formal courses, workshops at the Team Base and planned exerci

ses out on the hills and mountains. The running of the team is overseen by an elected committee who share the responsibility of managing the team. Elected members cover areas such as training, purchasing/evaluation and replacement of equipment, administration and fundraising. New team members initially serve a twelve month probationary period after which they are assessed and become full team members

Arran Mountain Rescue Team were delighted to marshal the Goatfell Hill Race again this year. Congratulations to all the runners who took part, especially Tom Spencer of Dark Peak Fell Runners, who won the race in an impressive time of 1 hour 14 minutes and 32 seconds. 🏆 One of our team members took these action shots as he arrived on the summit- which is of course, only half way!

As always, there was a strong local contingent in the field, with great runs put in by all and special mentions for Mark Bentley and Lynda Fenton of Arran Runners, who were first local male and female respectively 🏅🏅

Marshalling this event provides a valuable opportunity for additional training and equipment familiarisation on top of our core programme, while also allowing us to give back to the community we serve.

Arran Mountain Rescue Team is a charity made up entirely of volunteers and depends on donations from the public to carry out our rescue work.

Team members recently completed Water Rescue Scotland’s Whitewater Rescue Technician Advanced course, designed for operating in challenging environments such as grade 4-5 whitewater, as well as gorges and canyons where vertical access and egress may be required.
This intensive, hands-on course took place on the Findhorn and Spey rivers, with search scenarios conducted in both daylight and night-time conditions.
Building on our existing swiftwater rescue capability, the training equips team members with the advanced skills needed to respond effectively to inland water search and rescue incidents, should the need arise.

The team would like to extend a huge thank you to BT Business and their Head of Innovation, Douglas Adam. With their generous support, we are trialling the EE Rapid Connectivity Case and Starlink Mini, which will significantly improve our communications in remote locations across the island.

Effective communication is essential when managing complex and often fast-moving situations on the hill, and this equipment will make a significant contribution to improving our communications on the ground.

The team were called out yesterday afternoon to a hillwalker with a lower leg injury on the Postman’s Path between Catacol and Lochranza.
The casualty was given pain relief and the injury was splinted before being stretchered along the path to the argocat. From there, they were evacuated from the hill and handed over to the Scottish Ambulance Service.
As well as the SCA, we would also like to particularly thank a local paramedic who came out to assist.
We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.

The team were called out yesterday evening to an overdue hill walker who had become separated from their group on Goatfell. With very little information regarding their location, the team began searching all possible descent routes from the summit.
They were eventually located in Glen Rosa, having sustained injuries while descending steep and difficult ground. Despite this, the casualty had managed to continue into the glen, where the team assessed them before assisting them off the hill and handing them over to the Scottish Ambulance Service.
We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.

The casualty’s injury was splinted, and they were warmed up and evacuated by Argo Cat to Lochranza, where they were handed over to the Scottish Ambulance Service for transport to hospital.
We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.

⛑️ Team Training ⛑️
Today’s training provided an opportunity to work with some of our more specialist equipment.
The morning focused on a series of cardiac arrest scenarios, ensuring everyone is confident in using our Schiller Easy Pulse device, which delivers mechanical CPR. This equipment not only frees up personnel, but also maintains consistent, high quality chest compressions, something that can be difficult to sustain manually due to fatigue.
In the afternoon, we moved on to problem solving across a range of ropework scenarios, including passing knots while raising and lowering a casualty on steep ground.
We are incredibly grateful to our donors and supporters who make it possible for us to purchase such life-saving equipment.

The team would like to extend their sincere thanks to the friends and family of the late Iain McConnell, who generously donated over £1,500 to the team following a collection at his funeral.
Iain was a much-loved member of the Arran community and well known to several of our team. He will be sorely missed.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to all who knew and loved him.
