Ben has lost one leg above the knee and uses a wheel chair around the home. He really needed a detachable tray to work and eat from but could not find one to fit his chair. Remap came to the rescue and made one to the exact size he wanted with a melamine surface and a lip around three sides to keep things from slipping off. It simply has legs that slot into the two tube ends at the front of his chair. Ben was delighted and now finds daily routine jobs a real pleasure.

This Remap client has Motor Neuron Disease and because he is unable to raise his arms and hands, he couldn’t put his spectacles on without help.
Our Remap engineer has manufactured a fully adjustable device that holds his spectacles in position so that he can put them on and take them off without any help from his wife.

The solution involved creating a desk mounted heavy base to support an arm, adjustable in angle, length approx. 600mm.
At its outer end an adjustable yoke is fitted. At each extremity of the yoke are fitted a pair of sprung upward facing rubber covered fingers.
The lenses fit loosely between the sprung fingers, placed there initially by the client`s wife.
The adjustments at base and yoke allow for working from different work surface heights.
Once the spectacles are in position on the yolk, the client approaches with an “up and under” motion until they sit on his nose and ears. He then continues upwards and backwards with his spectacles in place.
This cycle can then be reversed to “park” the spectacles as required and can be repeated unaided as frequently as required.

A LITTLE BOYS DREAM IS TO BE ABLE TO BE ABLE TO BRUSH HIS OWN HAIR. Our young client is 8 years old, unfortunately he has no upper limbs and his big wish is to independently brush his own hair but he is only able to use his feet.
Martin our Remap engineer was amazed to see how he was able to pick up a marker pen with one foot and pass it to his other foot, where he then held his leg upwards to his hair line. Martin explained that he would try and adapt a brush with a similar size handle, enabling him to grip the brush using his toes. A hair brush was purchased and he was able to fabricate lengths of Velcro and attach them to the handle of the brush. The boy was then able to pick up his new brush and with a little practice brush his hair, only a few minor adjustments to strapping were needed to provide even more purchase on the brush handle.
Our young boy had an excited look on his face as his dream had come true and he was now able to brush his hair with his very own special hair brush.
From the knowledge gained, another brush was purchased and has been adapted using a moldable plastic to provide even better foot control of the brush.
Please note, the parents of this young boy have given their consent to use his image in this case as an example of what Remap Gloucestershire can achieve.

This little girl had grown out of her sticks and the next size up were way too bulky. She also struggled to keep the sticks in alignment due to her arm posture. Dave helped by raising the existing stick heights and providing optional handle angles. She can now continue to progress her walking and not catch her feet on the stick bases.
Thanks Dave!

Our daughter has LIS & uses a head button to communicate with a Possum, to control a variety of pieces of equipment, in her room & uses her Eye Gaze tablet to communicate, with the outside world. The tablet enables her to "speak" her words, when in her room, but she only uses it when in bed.
She chooses not to have the tablet connected, when in her chair, & we communicate using her eyes & spelling board.
When travelling in our car, particularly with only the driver accompanying her, she can not advise of any issues or tell us anything, if nobody is watching her eyes, to see she wants to spell.
She wears sunglasses, outside, & often in the car, which makes it even more of a challenge.
We decided to research a buzzer box, that can be connected to her head button & buzzes when she wishes to spell with us.
It's taken away lots of stress, from peeking down the sides of her sunglasses, or waiting for her to frustratingly whimper so we know she needs to spell.
A local charity, Remap, made the box, & it will be a very cheap solution, but is very effective.
It can even be used, in her room, in the event that nobody is watching Bex every second of the visiting day or in case staff are not on the ball.
It's helped many times like "I'm too hot," "Close car window it's too windy," "My Coccyx is hurting."
We are all really, really pleased & thanks again to Gloucester Engineer Tom.
