Our June calendar sponsor is our vets Woodlands Veterinary Centre. They have been with us since day one and continue to work with us through everything the hedgehogs go through.

They have been a huge support especially in the last couple of years also working with us alongside the APHA in researching the Hedgehog Virus we have been dealing with.

They see all the poor hedgehogs admitted due to injuries and do their best to fix what they can.

Thank you to the team at woodlands for all that you do for the hoggies and the rescue 🦔🦔🦔🦔

Volunteers needed, we’re currently admitting 58% more hedgehogs this year compared to the same time last year. We’re hoping this is showing the population is recovering from the 2024 virus outbreak and impacted their numbers drastically.

The 2 days we really need additional cover are Wednesday and Friday both morning and afternoon shifts are available, please download the application form from our website and email over.

Once we have forms our volunteers who deals with the applications will arrange a phone call to discuss the position, what it involves and which shifts would be suited.

We have some very exciting news!!!!

As a rescue we're proud and excited to tell you all that our founder / manager Vicki has been nominated in the BBC Gloucestershire Make A Difference Awards in the Animal Category. Not only has she been nominated but she is a finalist.

We're all looking forward to the Award Ceremony in September to see how she gets on.

Here is her story

The story starts in 2014 when Vicki’s daughter Emily found two small hedgehogs in their garden and, having been brought up in a family who took in poorly wildlife it was an easy decision to look after these visitors.

With the support and encouragement of Jo from Wild Hogs Hedgehog Rescue in Frampton, Vicki set about developing a rescue in her family home which admitted 152 hedgehogs in 2015 and in 2016 had a purpose hospital built in her back garden. The rescue can now take in 1000 hedgehogs a year.

In 2023 the hospital expanded again moving to a unit in Abbotswood in Brockworth, with over 100 hog pods to accommodate injured/or sick animals.

In addition to her family commitments and a part-time gardening job, Vicki dedicates her life to helping to rescue and rehabilitate hedgehogs.

The hedgehog population has plummeted in recent years, and Vicki has spent the last 11 years fighting to halt the decline across Gloucestershire.

Vicki undertakes all the activities across the rescue including the daily cleanout, analysing poo samples, prognosis, delivery of medicine and at this time of the year also hand feeding hoglets. On top of all the admin and fundraising that comes with running a rescue.

This activity often means that Vicki will be at the rescue at 5.00am before going to work and then returning until late in the evening.

Vicki has been involved in education by giving talks to schools and community groups and in recent years has been assisting APHA/DEFRA with vital research into the Hedgehog Arterivirus, which meant travelling Denmark to make a presentation to other rescues at the International Conference for Hedgehog Professionals at the University of Copenhagen. So not only has Vicki been dealing with the virus in the rescue here, she has been doing everything she can to raise awareness in other rescues and providing support and practical advice wherever possible.

We will keep you updated and will let you know when Vicki's reaction to the news will be played on air on BBC Radio Gloucestershire later this month.

TRANSPORT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We’re looking for help with transporting hedgehogs from the Forest of Dean to the rescue in Brockworth.

We cover a large area which includes all areas of the Forest of Dean including Newent and Ross on Wye areas.

We are the closest rescue that has a large capacity and need help when hedgehogs need to come in.

Transport volunteering is on an as and when basis, when we need transport we will post on the transport group, if you can help you reply and the details are sent to you. We will provide you with a carrier and heat pad.

If you can help please visit the volunteering page on our website where our forms can be downloaded and emailed to us.

We will then get in contact and arrange for you to be added to the group.

One of todays admission was this little girl from Ross on Wye

She is very dehydrated which can be seen in her skin, we have started to slowly rehydrate her as well as gradually giving her formula so not to upset her tummy with the change from mums milk to puppy formula.

So we now have 3 hour and 2 hourly hand feeds.

Tonight the feed schedule is

6pm x 3
8pm x 1
9pm x 2
10pm x 1
12am x 3

Then at 6am we start them all again 🦔🦔🦔

Hoglets eat a lot and love nothing more than spreading their food around their pod.

It’s June and the crazy summer season has hit with a bang, more hedgehogs coming in, more hoglets being born, 3 hourly hand feeds starting at 6am and finishing at midnight.

Today we have had a total of 8 volunteers in the rescue with a total of 40 hours worked and we still didn’t get everything done.

Our priority has to be the care of the hedgehogs and then the fundraising which we’re currently preparing for a weekend at the Orchard Street Market, as well as looking after the hedgehogs we also have to raise the £7000 a month it costs to run the rescue, without the funds we cannot run.

So please bear with us, please understand that we’re doing our best at a time when we’re also having to deal with anti-social behaviour, criminal damage, police reports and council reports.

On top of our continued daily work with the APHA and DEFRA fighting and learning about the Hedgehog Arterivirus, we’re also helping other rescues across the UK to deal with positive cases in both supporting and advising roles.

So we are slower in responding to messages and emails, we cannot monitor Facebook comments on our own posts or others that we’re being tagged in, so please if you want to ask about a hedgehog follow the instructions on the admission receipt given to you when the hedgehog was admitted, but understand there will be a delay, please call us if you have a hedgehog in need as that will be the quickest way of contacting us to get it admitted. If you have other questions etc either email us or message us through our page and we will do our best to reply when we can.
