Hop Along Thanet Hop Along Thanet (HAT) is a community association that aims to bring together individuals, in order to grow hops in their gardens and on their allotments.

This association follows the advice and example of two existing successful hop farm projects in East Kent that will offer ongoing support as we grow our own project. We will be part of a revival in hop growing that has a rich (and tasty) history and heritage in Kent. HAT will source and supply the hop rhizomes and offer advice and support to members regarding growing and harvesting techniques.

CALLING ALL BREWERIES 📣

We are appealing for a new brewery partner following the sad closure of NorthDown Brewery last month.
We formed in February 2021 with members growing the hops used for the annual Green Hop B**r festival that was brewed at NorthDown.

With 60 members it’s clear it’s a very popular pastime & well rewarded one with members enjoying free tastings of the b**r!

We are now looking for another brewery partner in the East Kent area and perhaps further afield within Kent.
The growing of hops in gardens and on allotments has allowed our members to, in their own small way, keep the growing of hops tradition alive in East Kent.

Any breweries that would like to get involved can contact the group at [email protected]

This is the event Hopalong will be joining on Saturday 10th(thank you to all at Gadds). As you can see times have been extended to 12-5pm for this. This is clearly how the mistake re opening hours was made initially so we’ve unblamed Chris!☺️

For all Hopalong Members
Following a couple of sad and difficult days, and with the help of Katie and Jonnie from Northdown Brewery we are still able to have our tasting day of this years crop.
It will now be at The Gadds Ramsgate Brewery and Taproom, Unit 4 Pysons Road Industrial Estate, Hornet Close, Broadstairs, CT10 2YD. It will be on Saturday October 10th from 12-5pm
A massive thank you to Eddie Gadd for stepping in🙏
The cask is with the brewery now and each Hopalong member will have a free pint so if you don’t want to drink it then and there please bring your Hopalong bottles with you. We do have a few bottles left for members who only joined us during this current growing year so please make yourselves known to one of the Committee on the day.
The outside area is much smaller that the one we used at Northdown so it may be useful to bring your own chairs if you’re staying a while.
An email will also be sent out to all members later today.

We are really sad and shocked to have to tell all of our members that Northdown Brewery has ceased trading. We will be emailing all of our members about this and will work to see what other options we might have to keep Hopalong going!

We, and a couple of our members returned to Northdown Brewery to complete the bine stripping this morning. We then bagged up and weighed the hops shown. Yesterday 25kg went into the brew for the green ale. In total our small organisation had harvested almost 70kg of hops This is the best crop yet. These have been sacked up to be taken to Hukin Hops near Tenterden for drying. They will the be used for future brews. Thank you to those who stopped to help us yesterday it was really good to meet our new members face to face. Thank you Northdown Brewery for all your support and the bacon butties!

MONDAY 14th SEPTEMBER IS HARVEST DAY 🌱

The hops MUST be delivered to NorthDown Brewery by MIDDAY. ( they can be left outside the shutter if you are an early bird)

If you have grown both PRIMA DONNA & FUGGLES hops please keep separately from each other. They brewery will then decide what to use & how.

We do have a lovely group of merry hop pickers who can strip your vines if you can’t BUT we do appreciate if folk can give a hand in the picking as it’s a mammoth task!
Tea, coffee, bacon butties will be supplied for FREE by the brewery.

Any issues at all please contact Chris via the email.

See you Monday!

SAVE THE DATE! 🌱
The hop harvest date has been set - MONDAY 14th September NorthDown Brewery from 8.30am.
Hops MUST be delivered by midday the latest. If you haven’t the time to attend, cut your vines & bring along where we will pick for you.
It is a MAMMOTH task so the more the merrier in stripping the vines & however much time you can spare it is a huge help!
Tea, coffee & bacon butties are provided free of charge to keep us going 😉
