As we reflect on Sunday's National Fishing Remembrance Day service at the quayside in Brixham, we continue holding in our thoughts the bereaved families, friends and fishermen who attended in person and on Facebook live (sorry the strong winds played havoc with the broadcast). We thank the music accompaniment, and maritime and local organisations that regularly support the event. There is a lot of planning and organising that goes on in the background to make the service run smoothly.
In Beer, a separate time of remembrance took place through the village which concluded at the fishermen's memorial plaques as their community remembers.
In the lead up to our service, with permission to share, Julian Lane brother of Mark Lane who was lost with his crewmate on 12.04.1985 on 'My Emma', cleaned the memorial to 'The Great Gale' (1866) in St. Mary's Church graveyard, Brixham. A selfless act of kindness to reveal the names of some that were lost with 25 unknown and an estimated 100 never found. In part, driven by an untold pain Julian carries with him, that fortunately most of us will never come to know.
