Cuttlefish nursery project update: improved water flow, controlled temperature to replicate current sea temperatures, 'hatch cam' added for remote monitoring.
No hatchlings as yet. A small number of eggs are plump and appear close to hatching.
Note for interest: cuttlefish eggs were rescued from the exposed shoreline within Torbay having been stranded after and easterly swell. These eggs were collected from the high tide line on dry land and would have likely perished. The eggs are kept in a controlled environment and if they hatch (many unknown variables regarding date laid, conditions and exposure prior to collection etc) they will be cared for until they reach a predetermined size, after which they will be returned to the wild.
This project was set up with the aim to protect native cuttlefish and increase opportunity for healthy marine biodiversity in Torbay, specifically around seagrass habitats.
